Job Summary

The Engineer III position is the advanced level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees in the Engineer III position solve complex problems in engineering areas of specialization with limited supervision. An Engineer III is expected to develop advanced skills, and the ability to work with greater independence. An Engineer III effectively applies fundamental concepts and procedures to work that is progressively complex and varied.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to:

  1. Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of problems of increasing scope and complexity.
  2. Contributes to team decision-making in the accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities.
  3. Deals with changing priorities and differing situations and makes decisions that may affect the work of the team.
  4. Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches related to well-defined problems and analysis of increasing scope and complexity.
  5. Conducts engineering and related studies.
  6. Completes routine engineering projects with minimal oversight with increasing ability to independently manage project schedules and interfaces; increasingly competent to design, operate and maintain systems with moderate impact on existing systems.
  7. Possesses and applies the fundamental concepts, practices and procedures; proficient in technical and analytical competencies.
  8. Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities.
  9. Demonstrates effective verbal and written communication skills.
  10. Maintains accurate records and files.
  11. Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally.

Required/Basic Qualifications

Note: Dependent on relative experience, the level to which a candidate is aligned is outlined below.

Engineer III

  1. Bachelor's of Science degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited program.
  2. In addition to required degree, four (4) years minimum of related work experience.
  3. A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.

Senior Engineer

  1. Bachelor's of Science degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited program.
  2. In addition to required degree, six (6) years minimum of related work experience OR
  3. Bachelor's of Science degree in Engineering (does not need to be ABET accredited) AND five (5) years of engineering experience with state registration as a Professional Engineer.
  4. A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.

Desired Qualifications

  1. Master's of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program.
  2. Four (4) years prior engineering experience or related project/program management experience.
  3. Prior distribution, transmission, circuit modeling, etc. experience.
  4. Passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam.
  5. Increasingly proficient in principles of project management.
  6. Experience in the utility industry.
  7. Department specific experience applicable to the hiring department.
  8. Demonstrated advancing application of engineering theories and principles.
  9. Increasingly proficient in practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, preparing and presenting recommendations.
  10. Good written and oral communication skills.

Working Conditions

  1. Hybrid - Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable commute to the designated Duke Energy facility.
  2. Valid driver's license.
