Our team is responsible to develop and deliver transmission solutions that enable the grid of tomorrow/renewable future. In this role you will support offshore and onshore electric substation and transmission projects, within National Grid Ventures. This role will also support joint venture projects including Community Offshore Wind.

National Grid is hiring an Engineering Manager in our US Offshore Transmission team in Boston, MA or Brooklyn, NY

Job Purpose

The candidate will be working primarily in the Offshore Wind business unit leading electrical engineering packages for onshore and offshore high voltage transmission cables. The candidate will manage a team of engineers and external consultants to lead work packages from conceptual engineering through commissioning.

  1. Manage project engineering and development activities associated with high voltage submarine and underground cable systems to deliver desired project outcomes.
  2. Support the broader NGV US Northeast team in policy, technical assessments and project development phases.
  3. Manage all aspects of cable system engineering requirements including route selection, cable design, and installation for currently planned HVDC projects and offshore grids.
  4. Manage and own technical evaluations of projects and support economic values and cost estimations.
  5. Work across all phases of feasibility assessments, proposal write-ups, cost and pricing formation, stakeholder engagement, and regulatory processes.
  6. Manage team of subject matter experts to provide input to state and federal permit processes, e.g. BOEM Construction and Operations Plan and NY State Article VII process.

Key Accountabilities

  1. Responsible to manage engineering team to deliver simultaneous delivery of multiple projects.
  2. Responsible for the proper staffing and development of personnel.
  3. Guides and enables employees to accomplish performance objectives.
  4. Fosters a fair and trusting environment through open communications.
  5. Train and develop workforce competencies.
  6. Responsible for the preparation and control of development expense and capital budgets within area of responsibility.
  7. Accountable for delivery of engineering packages and team performance.
  8. Pursue technical assessments to deliver most economically advantageous options, feasibility and project opportunities.
  9. Provide technical evaluation of OEM proposals and advise on product selection.
  10. Oversee consultants’, engineers or other subject matter experts as required to augment or complement the Business Development team.
  11. Lead technical analysis as needed to support potential project partnerships.
  12. Document, present and report findings and justifications. Help prepare executive summaries or investment committee papers.
  13. Support or lead on siting, permitting and licensing requirements and/or hearings, if required.
  14. Represent National Grid interests on national, regional, and local levels when necessary.
  15. Work in a project team and matrix environment interacting with individuals across NG functions in the US and UK.

Qualifications

  1. Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related fields, required.
  2. Seven to ten years of experience in submarine and underground cable system engineering, design, installation, or operations is required.
  3. Excellent interpersonal and managerial skills.
  4. Established relationships or working knowledge of cable suppliers and installer is highly desirable.
  5. Demonstrated ability to translate complex technical topics into business insight & articulate the impact of results.
  6. Demonstrated ability to manage complex team interfaces to facilitate and drive project deliverables is essential.
  7. Familiarity with recent trends in on-shore and off-shore wind, other large-scale renewable generation, energy storage, conventional generation and emerging technologies such as green hydrogen is a plus.

New England MA: $156,000 - $184,000 a year
