Key job responsibilities

The key responsibilities of a Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) Team Chief Engineer typically include:

  1. Planning and Coordination: Developing and implementing NDT plans, schedules, and procedures for various projects or inspections. Coordinating with project managers, clients, and other stakeholders to ensure NDT activities align with project requirements and timelines.
  2. Technical Leadership: Providing technical guidance and oversight to the NDT team, ensuring that testing methods and techniques are applied correctly and consistently. Staying up-to-date with the latest NDT technologies, standards, and industry best practices.
  3. Quality Assurance: Ensuring that NDT activities comply with relevant codes, standards, and specifications. Implementing quality control measures and reviewing NDT reports and data for accuracy and completeness.
  4. Personnel Management: Supervising and leading the NDT team, including technicians and inspectors. Assigning tasks, and providing training and mentorship to team members.
  5. Equipment Management: Overseeing the selection, procurement, maintenance, and calibration of NDT equipment and instruments. Ensuring that equipment is properly maintained and calibrated to meet industry standards and project requirements.
  6. Data Analysis and Reporting: Analyzing and interpreting NDT data and results. Preparing comprehensive reports and presenting findings to clients, project managers, and other stakeholders.
  7. Safety and Compliance: Ensuring that NDT activities are conducted in a safe and compliant manner, adhering to relevant safety regulations, environmental guidelines, and company policies.
  8. Project Management: Participating in project planning and execution, collaborating with other engineering disciplines, and ensuring that NDT activities are integrated seamlessly into the overall project workflow.
  9. Continuous Improvement: Identifying opportunities for process improvements, implementing best practices, and promoting a culture of continuous learning and development within the NDT team.

The NDT Team Chief Engineer plays a crucial role in ensuring the integrity and reliability of structures, components, and systems through effective non-destructive testing and inspection activities.

A day in the life

This role acts as Amazon’s front line when it comes to hands-on electrical and mechanical equipment troubleshooting. They maintain, operate, and troubleshoot mission-critical data center facility equipment including electrical support equipment that supports servers that must maintain better than 99.999% uptime. Equipment will include but is not limited to stand-by diesel generators and related fuel systems, 3 phase electrical systems such as switchgear, UPS units, PDUs, and VRLA batteries and associated systems. Mechanical equipment includes CRAHU units, water systems, air handlers and associated systems, pumps, and motors. Additional support equipment is included in the scope of the role which includes fire/life safety equipment, building automation systems, and general facilities equipment.

The CE directs, trains and supports technicians in their role of providing hands-on electrical and mechanical equipment troubleshooting and operations. Implementation and execution of site/equipment-specific training exercises is also expected. They manage projects from conception to completion. These projects involve independent work as well as collaboration with external support groups including engineering, automation, processing, and finance in both local and global settings. The CE will be tasked with creating and delivering on key milestones, obtaining and tracking quotes for all necessary costs, and documenting project results for future implementation at other facilities.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • Technical (Military/Trade School) training or degree in a relevant field (for example: electrical, mechanical).
  • 3+ years of electrical or mechanical experience.
  • 3+ years of data center or mission critical facilities (example: hospital, military facility, public safety facility, etc.) experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 4+ years of Data Center Engineering Experience.
  • Associates or Bachelor’s Degree.
  • Experience leading a team.
