Engineer-In-Training I, Traffic Modeling

This position is only open to Colorado state residents.

  • This position is covered by the Partnership Agreement between the State of Colorado and Colorado Workers for Innovative and New Solutions (COWins).
  • New employees to the State will be paid biweekly. There are 26 biweekly pay periods in a year.

About the Unit
The Traffic Operations & Technology Services unit at the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) provides highway safety and traffic operations-related input for transportation planning and project development to improve operations through multiple programs and projects.

About the Position
The Engineer in Training I will work under the guidance and direction of a licensed Professional Engineer and will learn to support CDOT Regions in the areas of traffic operations, traffic analysis, traffic engineering, and data collection to assist with asset and program management, traffic operations and safety, field operations, and maintenance activities.

Major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Traffic Engineering Modeling, Modeling Support, and Data Collection

  • Learn to collect and ensure quality control of traffic data.
  • Learn to collect traffic field data, including speed data and traffic counts.
  • Learn to assist in statewide traffic signal and ramp metering asset management.
  • Learn to generate and maintain traffic models and document all inputs.
  • Learn to utilize various tools to compare improvement options at intersections.
  • Learn to communicate with the public and provide clarification on traffic-related issues.
  • Learn to assist in managing Traffic Operations projects.
  • Learn to retrieve and analyze historical crash data.
  • Learn to assist in providing training and technical support to Regions.
  • Learn about traffic data analysis and database management.
  • Learn to effectively communicate analysis findings in writing.
  • Learn about bottleneck reduction and analysis.
  • Learn modeling software and tools.

Traffic Operations Evaluations and Engineering Studies

  • Learn to conduct research and develop plans for Operations Evaluations.
  • Learn to review projects from a traffic operation engineering perspective.
  • Learn about the impacts of traffic operation improvements on various stakeholders.

Transportation Systems Management and Operations (TSM&O) and Engineering Support

  • Learn to work closely with various CDOT branches to provide support for TSM&O Program.
  • Learn to assist with TSM&O program-related tasks and collaboration.
  • Learn how to review specifications and provide essential traffic engineering support.
  • Participate in data collection activities as required.
  • Learn to develop new traffic programs and processes for data support.
  • Learn to assist in researching new technology and TSM&O best practices.
  • Learn to monitor funding pools and project expenditures.
  • Learn to assist in SAP transactions and create custom reports.
  • Other job duties as assigned.
