Multiple Ph.D. positions in Environmental Engineering– McKenzie group at Temple University (Philadelphia, PA)

The McKenzie Environmental Engineering Research Group (MEERG) at Temple University is seeking multiple highly motivated Ph.D. students. MEERG has multiple ongoing projects that principally consider chemical contaminant fate and transport for the following two themes: 1) stormwater (ranges of contaminants), and 2) poly and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in a range of media and reaction mechanisms.

Applicants should be enthusiastic and motivated, interested in collaborative work, and should have strong verbal and written communication skills. All positions include experimental work and applied analytical chemistry; laboratory or chemical analysis experience is highly valued. Preference will be given to people who already have a M.S. in a relevant field. Potential projects are shown below:

  • Contaminant mobility in infiltration-based green stormwater infrastructure (GSI) including nutrients, metals, PFAS, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. The research will include laboratory and mesocosm studies.
  • PFAS interaction with interfaces including air-water and biosolids. This project will be based on laboratory experiments and include both targeted analysis of known PFAS and high-resolution mass spectrometry analysis for suspect screening.
  • Contaminants in stormwater, especially metals and metalloids, focusing on field assessment of novel water quality enhancement approaches (e.g., sorbents and treatment trains) or sediment facilitated transport. Applicants with field experience preferred.
  • Priority is given to fall 2024 applicants. Applicants should complete the applications, including letters of recommendation and test scores, by 12/15/2023.
  • Complete the Temple University application for graduate admission and submit all required supplemental documents. More information on the graduate admissions process is available at: . Questions regarding the admissions process should be directed to .
  • Only fully completed applications will be considered. Applicants are encouraged to plan ahead to ensure that all materials are received in a timely manner.

Philadelphia has been ranked among the top cities in which to reside or visit, and the McKenzie Environmental Engineering Research Group is happy to be nestled in Philadelphia with opportunities to conduct research on urban contaminant dynamics and to collaborate with partners in nearby institutions.
