Position Information
The Dallas District is looking for an Assistant Bridge Engineer Supervisor to support the Bridge Engineer Supervisor in managing the extensive bridge operations of the district, which oversees over 7,000 structures. This role will assist in overseeing bridge inspections, in-house bridge design, and geotechnical engineering. This dynamic position demands quick thinking and adaptability, offering a unique opportunity for a supervisor candidate with a strong background in structural design to support critical infrastructure projects!

Position Description
Supervises personnel engaged in transportation engineering work areas such as design, construction, maintenance and bridge inspection. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials, private entities and/or contractors. Employees at this level are virtually self-supervising and assume direct accountability for the work product.
Essential Duties:
  • Advises staff engineers.
  • Assists districts with bridge inspection-related matters.
  • Coordinates maintenance matters with Area Engineers.
  • Coordinates with area engineers on design and plan preparation.
  • Designs, sketches and recommends bridge repair procedures.
  • Establishes, modifies or interprets applicable standards, rules, methods, procedures, practices and policies.
  • Oversees and performs bridge structural evaluations/analyses of structures; inspects bridges that have appraisal and condition ratings or are recommended for closure.
  • Participates in district plan review activities.
  • Performs bridge inspections in response to an emergency.
  • Prepares correspondence and reports.
  • Rates and monitors load carrying capacities of bridges.
  • Represents the Department at meetings, conferences and related activities.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education : Bachelor's Degree in engineering or related science bachelor's or higher degree accepted by TX PELS.
Experience:
  • 4 years experience in transportation engineering. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications
  • Must have one (1) year supervisory/managerial experience. Project leader or lead worker experience may substitute for supervisory/managerial experience.
Licenses and Certifications :
  • Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Licensed Prof Engineer*
*Professional engineers licensed in another state in the United States , but not currently licensed in the State of Texas, must (1) meet the license requirements of the State of Texas Engineering Practices Act, (2) obtain a professional engineering license from the State of Texas within six (6) months of the date of hire, and (3) sign an agreement to that effect as a condition of employment.

  • Preventive structural maintenance methods and procedures.
  • Structural engineering terminology, principles, practices and methods and the application of engineering theory.
  • Directing and establishing objectives; clarifying roles and responsibilities through individual performance plans; monitoring and measuring performance against goals; evaluating results and making necessary adjustments to meet deadlines.
  • Developing, interpreting, and implementing policies, procedures, and technical information.
  • Overseeing and coordinating projects and program activities.
  • Using computers, applicable programs, applications, and systems.
  • Communicate effectively.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour
  • Subject to noise
  • Light work: Lift up to 20 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 10 lbs
  • Climbing - ascending/descending ladders, stairs, scaffoldings, ramps, etc
  • Balancing-walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling
  • Walking-moving on foot to accomplish tasks: long distance/from one work site to another
  • Lifting-raising objects from lower to higher position/horizontally to a different position
  • Talking-expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words
  • Hearing-perceive sound at normal speaking levels; receive information by oral communication.
  • Close Visual Acuity-work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading.
  • Visual Acuity-operate motor vehicles.
