ABOUT THE POSITION
VHB is offering an exciting opportunity for a Bridge Inspection Lead/Designer to join VHB and manage a team in support of our expanding bridge inspection practice within our Structures group. With our group rapidly expanding, this role will also provide a unique opportunity to also work on bridge design and load ratings in support of workload. Bridge Inspection
In this position, you will serve an important role in the planning and execution of bridge inspections. The role would involve serving as an inspection Team Leader to plan and perform bridge and culvert inspections while leading other inspectors. Tasks would include supervising the development of field notes, assembly of record documents, and upon completion of the inspection, generating inspection reports. Work will also include communicating with clients, state and government agencies, and abutters to coordinate access and general inspection activities. The work would involve a mix of office and field work. The ideal candidate should possess a "can-do" attitude, excellent verbal and written communication skills, Leadership skills, and an ability to work independently as well as with a team in a dynamic, fast-paced, and fun environment. The position includes significant opportunities for personal and professional development and growth within VHB's emerging bridge inspection practice.
Responsibilities
- Planning and performing structural inspections of highway and railroad bridges, culverts, ancillary structures, and buildings in accordance with NBI and AREMA Standards
- Completing bridge inspection report narratives, sketches, photos, and basic repair and rehabilitation cost estimates.
- Managing inspection equipment
- Performing quality control reviews of inspection reports
- Mentoring younger staff
Skills & Abilities
- Ability to work at heights, in confined spaces and adjacent to live highway and railroad traffic
- Familiarity with MassDOT, AASHTO, and AREMA inspection requirements
- Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
- Proactive and self-motivated, with excellent attention to detail and quality
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Enthusiasm to learn, seek out opportunities, and take responsibility
- Ability and willingness to work overnight when required for specific access requirements on roadways and on ROW tracks.
- Ability and willingness to travel (throughout New England), including overnight, as required
- Experience with vertical lift equipment, under-bridge inspection trucks and rope access credentials are a plus
Qualifications
- 5+ years of bridge inspection experience with PE licensure or/
- 10+ years of bridge inspection experience without license
- NHI/FHWA Safety Inspection of In-Service Bridges course preferred
- NHI/FHWA Fracture Critical course preferred
