The City of Pasadena is currently seeking an industrious, committed, and skilled Engineering Technician or Senior Engineering Technician to join the Transportation Department's team of professionals. Under general supervision, this position will support traffic studies and investigations, transportation engineering design, mobility, construction projects, and perform related duties as assigned.


The ideal candidate will possess current knowledge and experience in engineering practices, have strong technical knowledge of AutoCAD, an understanding of transportation and civil engineering concepts and practices, and be comfortable working independently in the field. Appointments will be made at either level based on experience and qualifications.

The major responsibilities of this position are listed below:

  • Assist engineers in preparing designs and engineering construction drawing for facilities.
  • Assist members of the public in conducting traffic and parking studies in response to requests for changes in public roadway and curbside parking facilities.
  • Perform AutoCAD computer-aided drafting of design plans for street signing and striping, street lighting, traffic signal channelization, and related projects.
  • Field-check various items to determine the accuracy of survey information, plans, and repair locations.
  • Field survey streets, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, street lights, traffic signals, storm drains, and other infrastructure; take measurements.
  • Perform plan reviews of signing and striping plans for construction projects.
  • Manage Center Service Center (CSC) requests.
  • Coordinate with Call Center staff and City Field Maintenance Crew for various field resolutions.
  • Respond in writing to a requestor on case closure.
  • Link public works information through GIS.
  • Research and respond to questions from the general public regarding department engineering information.
  • Prepare traffic studies, reports, and correspondence.
  • May assist in inspecting the construction of facilities under permits to ensure City requirements for methods and materials are met.

Engineering Technician:

  • Graduation from high school or GED equivalent , supplemented by college-level course work in engineering technology, civil engineering, transportation engineering, drafting, engineering mathematics or related fields.
  • At least two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in performing sub-professional engineering duties.

Senior Engineering Technician:

  • Graduation from high school or GED equivalent , supplemented by college-level course work in engineering technology, civil engineering, transportation engineering, drafting, engineering mathematics or related fields.
  • At least four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in performing sub-professional engineering duties.

Desirable Qualifications for both levels:

  • Associates or Bachelor's degree.
  • Public Agency experience.
  • Individuals who possess at least two years of recent experience utilizing AutoCAD to draft plans will be deemed most qualified.
  • GIS certified.

Selection Process

The selection process will consist of any combination of an evaluation of training and experience, an SME (Subject Matter Expert) Review, and a written or performance exam. The most highly qualified candidates may be invited to participate in an oral examination and a department-level interview.

Appointments will be made at either level based on experience and qualifications.

Probationary Period: 12 months

  • Must possess a valid California Class C driver's license and comply with the City's Motor Vehicle Safety Policy during the course of employment.
  • The employee is frequently required to lift up to 25 pounds.
