Job Description Summary:
As a member of the Checkout Engineering team, you will be responsible for the development and delivery of the applications and services that power PayPal’s Checkout user experiences. You will work closely with product, design, and analytics teams to understand what the buyers and merchants using our software desire from us. We're looking for talented, motivated and detail-oriented technologists with a passion for building beautiful products and experiences.
Your Way to Impact:
As a backend engineer for PayPal Checkout, you will deliver complete solutions and features spanning all phases of our software development lifecycle. In this role, you will be responsible for shaping the future of PayPal's customer facing checkout products. This will be accomplished through implementation of technical designs, direct contributions to architectural decisions, influencing the technical direction of our applications/systems and mentoring of junior engineers.
Your Day to Day:
- Provide technical leadership and guidance to a team of software engineers, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement.
- Demonstrate end-to-end ownership of features, projects, modules, and services that you and your team deliver in all phases of the software development lifecycle.
- Lead your team’s design and implementation of end-to-end solutions towards client-side applications using Java, J2EE, and other relevant technologies.
- Lead architectural discussions and contribute to the overall technical direction of the client-side applications, advocating for best practices and innovative solutions.
- Own and optimize software performance, identifying and resolving bottlenecks via monitoring, logging, and metrics to enhance the user experience.
- Act as a strong advocate for clean, scalable, high-performing, secure, and reliable software services.
- Own, Identify, and implement critical non-functional requirements (Availability, Security, Performance, Scalability, and Observability).
- Collaborate with other development teams to ensure seamless integration and deployment of consumer facing applications.
- Communicate effectively with all technical and non-technical partners and stakeholders.
- Conduct formal and informal code reviews, providing constructive feedback to team members.
- Mentor and guide junior engineers, fostering their professional growth.
- Stay up-to-date with the latest industry standards, tools, and technologies related to client-side development.
- Participate in program planning, influencing the product and technology roadmap.
What You Bring:
- 6+ years of professional experience in software development, with a strong emphasis on development of large-scale and performant applications.
- Expertise in multiple server-side languages such as Java, C++, C#, Go, Python, Kotlin, or Ruby.
- Familiarity with relational and non-relational database technology such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, and Bigtable.
- A history building modern, resilient and operationally efficient backend systems.
- Familiarity with observability tools and experience monitoring production systems.
- A strong belief that data is an essential tool to drive ideal solutions.
- Strong attention to detail, as well as a passion for delivering high-quality software solutions.
- Strong problem-solving skills, possessing the ability to work independently or collaboratively.
- Ability to mentor and up level team members.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
- Experience with modern software development practices, version control systems, and agile methodologies.
For the majority of employees, PayPal's balanced hybrid work model offers 3 days in the office for effective in-person collaboration and 2 days at your choice of either the PayPal office or your home workspace.
