Summary

Develops competencies and procedures for railroad signal systems. Completes electrical rail signal designs with minimal direction. Responsible for preparation and completion of rail signal electrical engineering designs that are responsive to project needs. Coordinates preparation of design details, plans, and drawings within assigned task areas. Helps supervise, schedule and check work of project team members. Works closely with other disciplines on multi-discipline projects. Responsible for productivity of subordinates and on-time, on-budget projects.

Essential Functions

  • Identifies, performs, witnesses and documents appropriate operational tests of signal and communications equipment and systems to ensure compliance with regulatory and Authority requirements.
  • Inspect completed work for conformance to plans, specifications, and regulatory compliance.
  • Provide engineering support to the Contractor’s key staff and Authority.
  • Address safety related issues to ensure a safe work environment.
  • Perform other duties of a similar nature.
  • Assist in managing various rail signal projects and coordinate with clients and rail project partners.
  • Technical planning and testing of rail signal infrastructure.
  • Responsible for engineering rail signal systems, including circuit designs and vital logic programming.
  • The Signal Engineer role will require working with customer specifications, railroad standards and FRA regulations.
  • Responsible for assisting in technical proposal development and other business acquisition elements.
  • A minimum of twenty (20) years of progressively responsible experience in railroad systems maintenance and/or construction in a Class 1 or commuter operating railroad environment including at least ten (10) years’ experience as a signal maintainer or signal technician.
  • Must possess a high level of knowledge of railroad signal best practices and systems testing, the General Code of Operating Rules, Federal Railroad Administration, and California Public Utilities Commission requirements.
  • Must possess a high level of knowledge and experience with highway-rail grade crossing warning systems and equipment.
  • Must be knowledgeable of field and office ATCS, Positive Train Control, and Centralized Traffic Control equipment and systems technology.
  • Must be previously qualified with a railroad to provide workplace protection under FRWS and to inspect, test, and supervise the work of others for compliance with these documents.
  • Must have the ability to perform scheduled and unscheduled systems installation work at any time on any day of the week.
  • Must have the ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, to lift objects weighing a minimum of 50 lbs and must have the ability to distinguish colors and to hear warning signals, radio and telephone devices.
  • Must have the knowledge of safe and efficient manipulation of equipment and tools necessary to perform installation tasks.

Preferred Experience

  • Must possess excellent communication, writing, and computer literacy skills.
  • Must be experienced with microprocessor setup and information extraction using a laptop computer.
  • Must have the ability to complete work under time pressures and to maintain composure under the stress of emergency situations.
  • Must possess strong interpersonal and organizational skills and demonstrate the ability to interact with a variety of public agency officials, other contractors, and with the general public in accordance with the Authority’s protocol for contractors.
