Senior Software Engineer - Instrument Control (C#)

Pacific Biosciences (PacBio) is seeking an experienced and innovative Senior Software Engineer specializing in instrument control software development using C#. This position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the advancement of genomic sequencing technology, helping to shape the future of scientific research and healthcare solutions.

As a Senior Software Engineer at Pacific Biosciences, you will lead the design, development, and maintenance of instrument control software for our cutting-edge genomic sequencing platforms. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams including hardware engineers, bioinformatics scientists, and software developers to ensure seamless integration and optimal performance of our instruments. Your expertise in C# programming and instrument control will be instrumental in driving innovation and maintaining PacBio’s leadership in the genomics industry.

Key Responsibilities

1. Design, implement, and maintain high-quality instrument control software using C# and .NET technologies.
2. Lead the full software development lifecycle from requirements analysis to design, implementation, testing, and deployment.
3. Collaborate with hardware engineers to define software interfaces and integrate software components with instrument hardware.
4. Optimize software performance and ensure robustness in challenging laboratory environments.
5. Troubleshoot and debug complex issues, ensuring timely resolution and minimal impact on instrument functionality.
6. Mentor junior engineers, providing technical guidance and expertise in software design and best practices.
7. Contribute to architectural decisions and participate in code reviews to maintain code quality and promote knowledge sharing.
8. Stay updated on industry trends and emerging technologies relevant to instrument control software and genomics.

Required Qualifications

1. Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field; advanced degree preferred.
2. 5+ years of professional experience in software development with a strong emphasis on C# and .NET framework.
3. Proven track record of designing and implementing complex software systems, preferably in instrument control or hardware interface development.
4. Solid understanding of software design principles, data structures, and algorithms.
5. Experience with multi-threaded programming and asynchronous programming techniques.
6. Strong debugging and problem-solving skills with a systematic approach to issue resolution.
7. Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively in a team environment.

Preferred Qualifications

1. Experience with real-time systems, embedded software development, or device drivers.
2. Familiarity with Agile/Scrum development methodologies and continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipelines.
3. Familiarity with Windows application development.
4. Experience with instrument control development.
5. Knowledge of genomics, bioinformatics, or life sciences applications.
6. Experience with Python programming language and familiarity with Linux operating systems.
7. Previous experience in a regulated industry such as biotechnology or healthcare.
