Senior Database Engineer

Job Overview

The Database Engineering team at Learning A-Z is looking for a Senior Database Administrator to be responsible for providing database support and strategy for our database ecosystem. Database administration includes production support, upgrades, performance tuning, disaster recovery as well as helping set and enforce db level controls and standards for the applications team. This leader will need to be hands-on and will often collaborate with the engineering teams offering guidance.

Expertise in SaaS and cloud delivery would be beneficial.

Job Responsibilities

1. Replication configuration and management
2. SQL query plan analysis and optimization
3. Backup and restoration management
4. Application query optimization
5. Enhances the effectiveness of database tools and services
6. Enhances the scalability and performance of existing database structures
7. Work with system engineers to maintain and monitor backup processes and test restorations including disaster recovery
8. Work with the infrastructure and other internal teams (e.g. developers and product managers) to identify system requirements
9. Monitor system performance and alerts to identify current and future problems
10. Ethical handling of private data
11. Minimize database downtime and maximize database reliability
12. Predict capacity requirements
13. Reports to the Database Manager
14. Help review requirements, specifications and technical design documents to provide timely and meaningful feedback
15. Keeps up to date with technological developments

Job Requirements

1. 5+ years experience with engineering and/or administering databases
2. Hands on, professional experience building and operating performance critical applications and databases. MySQL and Linux environments preferred
3. Strong knowledge of relational databases including normalization, indexing and SQL
4. Knowledge of data security and integrity
5. Knowledge of PHP or other scripting languages, a plus
6. Experience working in an Agile/Scrum development process, a plus
7. Experience with nosql databases a plus
8. Knowledge of a high volume SaaS db environment
9. Exceptional communications skills (verbal, written, illustrative/diagrammatic)
10. Ability to build strong relationships across the Development organization
