Chemical Engineer Other Engineer III NASA Glenn Research Center Cleveland, Ohio HX5 is an award-winning provider of engineering, research and development, and technical services to clients such as NASA and the Department of Defense. Founded in 2004, HX5 is a fast-growing veteran and woman-owned company with locations nationwide. HX5, in support of the GEARS contract at NASA Glenn Research Center, is seeking a Chemical Engineer to support NASA's Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate. This directorate is interested in technologies to support decarbonizing aviation on short and medium-range aircraft (100-300 passengers) flying between 1000 - 3000 km under the Commercially-viable Hydrogen Aircraft for Reduction of Greenhouse Emissions (CH2ARGE) program. Energy from hydrogen is the only viable non-nuclear energy that can provide zero carbon emissions power for the targeted flight range and aircraft size. The CH2ARGE activity is developing the integrated conceptual and experimental methodology that enable industry-wide adoption of medium-range Hydrogen Aircraft based on hydrogen-air fuel cells & cryogenic hydrogen architecture. This project is tasked to develop hydrogen-air fuel cells for the CH2ARGE activity. The selected Chemical Engineer will be tasked to support the design and testing of fuel cells and electrolysis systems for aeronautics applications. Assignments include the electrochemical system engineering support necessary to develop the aeronautical fuel cells system. This work includes fundamental chemical, electrical, and process engineering and documentation development for a hydrogen-air fuel cell power system with high power density. When necessary, this includes designing and implementing a component test to verify component concepts or performance envelopes. Required Skills: Electrochemical system engineering skills necessary to develop aeronautical fuel cell systems. Fundamental knowledge of chemical, electrical, and process engineering and documentation development for a hydrogen-air fuel cell power system with high power density. Knowledge to develop high-level models to predict the performance of electrochemical hardware as necessary to inform system-level process fluid and thermal requirements. Other Desired Skills: Skills to generate technical reports, presentation materials, and presentations to support NASA management requirements pertaining to this activity, including quarterly reports and test reports including data analysis. Skills to perform electrical power and other electrochemical testing of an aeronautical fuel cell. Education/Experience: Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering with 0 to 4 years of experience, or Master's degree and 4 to 8 years of experience. Other Position Requirements: Must be a US Citizen and successfully complete a U.S. government background investigation. Must be able to obtain and maintain the appropriate level of security clearance for the position.
