Based in Sonoma County, Northern California Public Media (NorCal) serves the San Francisco region through two public television stations, KRCB and KPJK, and one public radio station, KRCB FM. Overview:
The Broadcast Engineer & IT Technician is resourceful and knowledgeable about the flow of broadcast operations and equipment maintenance, and collaborates well with other departments.

Essential Job Duties:

  1. Maintain and repair technical equipment and computer-based systems associated with the operation of NorCal to broadcast engineering standards.
  2. Ability to read and understand engineering drawings to effectively install coax, wiring, and cabling in addition to physical equipment, and utilize such drawings to troubleshoot problems during and after installation.
  3. Troubleshoot and repair electronic and mechanical equipment that is required for the operation of our facilities.
  4. Understand the signal flow of analog and digital video, audio, and RF signals through our complex production and broadcast systems in order to assist operations and production staff.
  5. Work with the engineering staff to ensure proper equipment operation and provide optimum quality, while adhering to all FCC rules and regulations.
  6. Diagnose problems using standard practices and test equipment including, but not limited to, audio monitors, waveform and vectorscope, oscilloscope, and spectrum analyzer.
  7. Able to identify and prioritize the repair and replacement of equipment.
  8. Work closely with the other departments in the maintenance and operation of their associated equipment.
  9. Have in-depth knowledge of computer networking, cabling, software installation, and repairs.
  10. Assist our outsourced IT management company in the daily end-user issues that arise.
  11. Must have a service-orientated attitude towards staff and co-workers.
  12. Install and maintain update of various software and hardware packages in computer-based equipment.
  13. Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  1. Ability to understand the operation of the NorCal broadcast air-chain.
  2. General knowledge and understanding of UHF transmitter, ENG, SNG and RF microwave systems.
  3. General knowledge of the rules and regulations of the FCC.
  4. Use and knowledge of specialized and standard test equipment.
  5. Advanced computer skills preferred.
  6. This position requires an “on-call” status when emergencies or breakdown of critical equipment occurs to the operation of NorCal.
  7. Maintain and update the spare parts inventory and ordering of replacement parts as needed.
  8. Must have the ability to make decisions and take prompt action independently.
  9. Must be able to work alone and unsupervised when necessary.
  10. Must have attention to detail with great accuracy.
  11. Ability to understand and teach the operation of some technical equipment to persons in other departments of NorCal.

Education:
Bachelor's degree (preferred) in telecommunications, broadcast engineering, or a related field.

What we offer:
