Department Summary

The (Data) Research and Development Engineer is a technical leader with a high degree of knowledge in the overall field and recognized expertise in specific areas; problem-solving frequently requires analysis of unique issues / problems without precedent and / or structure. May manage programs that include formulating strategies and administering policies, processes, and resources; functions with a high degree of autonomy. Provides analyses for complex budget, funding, financial, or academic data, systems and resource projects working directly with internal and external constituents. Develops proposals and recommendations to guide and support a broader strategic direction for the function, research initiative, program and / or organizational unit. Manages and directs a wide variety of projects and follows through with all levels of staff and individuals inside and outside the organization.

Salary & Compensation

*UCLA provides a full pay range. Actual salary offers consider factors, including budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations. Qualifications
  1. Demonstrated experience managing multiple scientific/technical/educational/outreach projects. (Required)
  2. Strong knowledge and skill in financial analysis to prepare and maintain itemized, complex budgets for large scale, federally funded projects. Demonstrated knowledge of federal and state contract and grant fiscal policies and procedures, including proposal preparation requirements. (Required)
  3. Supervisory skills to effectively train, delegate responsibilities, evaluate employees, and administer necessary discipline (Required)
  4. Ability to analyze spacecraft and ground penetrating radar data products and communicate findings with broader technical and science teams. (Required)
  5. Detailed knowledge and experience in mathematics, statistical analysis, R, and performing statistical tests. (Required)
  6. Detailed knowledge and experience using the Unix operating system and Unix programming environments. (Required)
  7. Detailed knowledge of and experience with programming in Python. (Required)
  8. Ability to analyze spacecraft data and data products. (Required)
  9. Demonstrated ability to take initiative in performing job responsibilities, advanced skill in problem solving skills to gather information and analyze data, properly assess situations and formulate logical and objective conclusions. Ability to expand involvement in overall project issues. (Required)
  10. Strong organizational skills; ability to coordinate projects/proposals/events involving participants based in geographically disparate locations. (Required)
  11. Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite, calendar scheduling, project management software and video conferencing applications. Proficiency in using the Internet to perform Web research (Required)
  12. Ability to work evenings, weekends, and/or non-standard work schedule, as needed. (Required)

Education, Licenses, Certifications & Personal Affiliations
  1. Bachelor's Degree STEM Degree and / or equivalent experience / training (Required)
  2. Master's Degree STEM Degree and / or equivalent experience / training (Preferred)
