Head of Software Engineering: Commercial and Index Governance Systems

The Head of Software Engineering: Commercial and Index Governance Systems will develop, enhance, maintain and reimagine our customer facing web applications, internal commercial workflow applications and Index Governance applications.

This is a pivotal role to strategically transform our customer experience on how our external and internal customers interact with our intellectual property (IP), data and R&D team. This position is tasked to build a customer first software engineering culture, starting with a customer first mindset and working backwards to the technology solution and implementation.

The ideal candidate needs to be passionate about user experience and interacting with customers and product management to develop high fidelity clickable prototypes. This position requires strong communication skills paired with highly technical software engineering ability. You must have the ability to function as an architect and possess an excellent customer-focused attitude to lead our development teams.

As a key Leader of the Technology Organization, the Head of Software Engineering: Commercial and Index Governance Systems will lead the execution of the platform strategy leveraging a portfolio of teams and programs that include software engineering, test engineers, user experience designers, and software architects.

The Head of Software Engineering: Commercial and Index Governance Systems must be a champion for change and culture, drive innovation across the organization, foster Agile principles, and create an environment that motivates and develops a bright and technically diverse engineering organization. This position is a leader of leaders, responsible for not only guiding teams but also developing talent at all levels of the organization.

Key Responsibilities:

People Management & Talent Development:

  • Be a culture carrier and shape the engineering culture to be customer centric.
  • Lead, inspire, and manage a globally distributed, cross-functional organization, ensuring that all team members are engaged and performing at their best.
  • Foster a culture of continuous learning and professional growth by implementing structured upskilling programs, talent development initiatives, and succession planning.
  • Actively mentor and coach engineering managers, helping them grow into more effective leaders and nurturing future leadership within the organization.
  • Promote a strong sense of ownership, accountability, and collaboration across teams, ensuring that each team member is aligned with the overall goals and mission of the organization.
  • Develop strategies for identifying and nurturing high-potential employees, ensuring that the organization has the talent required to meet current and future challenges.

System Strategy & Execution:

  • Oversee the Commercial and Index Governance Systems strategy, ensuring it delights our internal and external customers.
  • Build GenAI capabilities into the internal and external applications/systems.
  • Partner with client services and index governance teams to understand their workflows and build applications to simplify their workflows.

Development Management:

  • Create and deliver on a multi-year roadmap that aligns with business objectives.
  • Manage and build high-performing teams, both on-shore and off-shore, ensuring seamless collaboration and productivity.
  • Set and vet the architecture direction of our systems.
  • Develop and implement a GenAI strategy to automate workflows.

Agile Responsibilities:

  • Provide ongoing coaching to agile teams, ensuring they work efficiently and meet their sprint goals.
  • Mentor team members, fostering an environment of continuous improvement and innovation.
  • Conduct effective one-on-ones with direct reports, ensuring they are working at capacity and meeting their deadlines.
  • Resource projects effectively, creating new teams as needed, and holding accountability for project resourcing.

Technology Operations:

  • Ensure production operations achieve 99.99% uptime, partnering with infrastructure teams to manage AWS environments effectively.
  • Lead technology audit compliance efforts in line with regulatory requirements.
  • Stay current with modern software development technologies, guiding the team in adopting best practices and emerging tools.

Experience:

  • Proven background in software development, with a deep technical understanding of building modern AWS web-based applications.
  • Prior experience managing large and diverse teams.
  • Extensive experience in managing and developing talent, particularly in a leadership role that involves mentoring and coaching other leaders.
  • Prior experience in cloud-based software development (AWS or Azure) and partnering with Product Management in an agile SDLC.
  • Experience in a regulated industry with a strong understanding of compliance standards (e.g., SSAE16/SOC2/ISO).
  • Expertise in managing high-performing agile teams, including both on-shore and off-shore teams, with a focus on global development.
  • Previous architecture experience with large-scale cloud-based software.

Technologies:

  • Broad experience with Front-End tooling and development.
  • Broad experience with database technologies like SQL, NoSQL, Postgres, and Oracle.
  • Experience building containerized applications.
  • Proficiency in building applications hosted in AWS.
  • Familiarity with memory caching, Java application development, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, REST, JSON, XML, ReactJS, AngularJS.
  • Experience in API Development and API Gateway development.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Technology or MBA.
  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Computer Science.
  • At least 12+ years of software development experience.
  • Experience in scaling SCRUM, preferably SAFe.
  • Advanced knowledge of object-oriented programming concepts and relational data modeling.
  • Ability to collaborate and brainstorm in a team environment.
  • Technical certifications and AWS certifications are a plus.

Compensation/Benefits Information: (This section is only applicable to US candidates)

S&P Global states that the anticipated base salary range for this position is $185,500 to $300,000. Final base salary for this role will be based on the individual’s geographic location, as well as experience level, skill set, training, licenses and certifications. In addition to base compensation, this role is eligible for an annual incentive plan. This role is eligible to receive additional S&P Global benefits.
