Summary:
The Vice President of Engineering provides strategic direction to the engineering team, driving innovation and improving design, cost and reliability of Certarus’ equipment platform. This role will engage with other senior leaders and managers to align the engineering and technology plans with the overall business and customer needs.
The VP of Engineering will provide technical support internally and externally and work closely with strategic customers and suppliers. Certarus is a dynamic, fast-paced organization, and the successful candidate requires someone with a commitment to deliver exceptional performance company-wide and for our customers.
Based in either Houston, TX or Calgary, Alberta, this position reports to the President, with travel to field locations and strategic partners across both Canada and the USA. This role will have the ability to make a significant impact on Certarus’ growth strategy and future success, as the engineering function drives the design, development and support of our equipment portfolio.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide technology strategy and capital planning to achieve business goals by monitoring equipment performance and reliability levels, fostering innovation, and prioritizing improvement initiatives.
- Oversee engineering team activities including design, development, project management, product improvement, new product evaluation, and innovation.
- Work closely with sales, corporate development and operations teams to understand business outlook and market expansion opportunities that inform new equipment and facility development plans.
- Promote and oversee strategic relationships with critical suppliers and partner organizations, and work with key vendors to ensure cost-efficient and time-efficient design, build, commissioning and service.
- Provide direction and collaborate with engineering, operations, and maintenance teams to continuously improve reliability, maintainability, and safe operations of Certarus equipment.
- Mentor, develop and manage a diverse, high-performing engineering team across the USA and Canada.
- Serve as an engineering and technical expert, assess and evaluate and aid in execution of projects with hands-on engineering as needed.
- Provide direction to the engineering team’s development and sustaining of operational procedures, technical drawings, and training materials to ensure consistent processes, safe field work, and appropriate maintenance programs.
- Oversee and review financial information and adjust operational and capital budgets to promote profitability.
- Promote and drive a proactive and positive HSE culture within Certarus.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, any discipline.
- 10+ years’ experience in a full-time engineering role, and 5+ years in a management role.
- CNG, RNG, hydrogen, or energy or oil and gas industry experience.
- Gas compression, rotating equipment, and/or SCADA experience would be an asset.
- Track record of successfully solving technical problems with a practical and pragmatic approach.
- Experience with implementing reliability programs, data analysis, and field test equipment would be an asset.
- Successful track record with managing engineering teams for design, build, installation, and commissioning of technology projects would be an asset.
- Candidates with additional Business or operations experience or MBA would be considered an asset.
- Knowledge of applicable state / province and federal codes such as ASME, ANSI, CSA, TSSA, NFPA for US and Canada.
- Knowledge of applicable safety and environmental regulations (OSHA, EPA, OH&S etc.) would be an asset.
- Strong organizational, communication, and motivational skills including the ability to collaborate and manage with all levels of the business.
- Demonstrated decisiveness in identifying priorities, resolving business problems, managing various stakeholder requirements.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
