Job Summary:

A Structural Plans Examiner is responsible for reviewing and evaluating construction plans and blueprints to ensure compliance with building codes, regulations, and safety standards, particularly concerning structural integrity. They work closely with architects, engineers, contractors, and building officials to verify that proposed construction projects meet local, state, and national building standards and codes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Review and analyze structural designs, plans, and blueprints for commercial, residential, and industrial buildings.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant building codes, zoning regulations, and safety standards, including earthquake, wind load, and other structural requirements.
  • Identify discrepancies or potential issues in structural plans and provide clear, detailed feedback to architects, engineers, and contractors.
  • Collaborate with other departments such as planning, zoning, fire safety, and electrical to ensure comprehensive code compliance.
  • Assist in issuing permits after the successful review and approval of structural plans.
  • Stay updated on changes to local, state, and national building codes and incorporate those changes into plan reviews.
  • Respond to inquiries from contractors, builders, and the public regarding structural codes and standards.
  • Provide guidance and technical support to junior staff, as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, architecture, or a related field. A professional engineer (PE) license or structural engineer (SE) license is preferred.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in structural design, engineering, or plan review.
  • Strong knowledge of national and local building codes, including the International Building Code (IBC) and other relevant standards.
  • Excellent attention to detail and the ability to identify potential structural issues in design documents.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, to convey technical information to a variety of stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in reviewing technical documents and construction drawings using AutoCAD or other design software.
  • Certification as a Building Plans Examiner by a recognized body (such as the International Code Council) is preferred.

Working Conditions:

  • Primarily office-based with hybrid remote availability.
  • Typically works regular business hours, but may need to handle urgent reviews or site visits outside of standard hours.

Salary:

Commensurate with experience and qualifications.
