SMX is hiring an Exchange/Messaging Engineer to provide support to our Marine Corps client. This is a hybrid role based in Quantico, VA.
In support of our DoD client's mission to provide enterprise network operations and computer network defense, the Exchange/Messaging Engineer will provide Enterprise Exchange and BlackBerry support.
The position requires in-depth knowledge of Microsoft-based infrastructure design and development, messaging and directory services best practices and advanced knowledge of systems administration, operations, and management.
The Exchange/Messaging Engineer should have expert-level experience planning, documenting, installing, managing, monitoring, and troubleshooting high-availability Exchange Server 2016 and 2019 environments and will be expected to be able to comfortably configure aspects of the Microsoft Enterprise Exchange in support of a 265,000 user environment across multiple AD domains to provide messaging support.
The messaging environment consists of Microsoft Exchange mail services (Client Access, Hub Transport, and Mailbox server roles), Enterprise Blackberry services, NetApp backup and restore solutions, along with UnitySync directory synchronization services. The underlying infrastructure consists of physical servers, VMware Virtualization and NetApp storage solutions.
Additional duties and responsibilities include:
- Support the overall health of technologies associated with the Enterprise Messaging environment
- Provide Microsoft Enterprise Exchange operational configuration management support
- Provide Cisco IronPort technical expertise in the management, maintenance, and problem resolution
- Resolve Tier III messaging tickets
- Configure Antivirus products and HBSS as they relate to Exchange Servers
- Provide guidance and instruction (to include written documentation) such as SOPs and inputs into the knowledge management system repository to the service desk for handling standard Message related incidents and service requests
- Provide documentation, guidance and instruction to the Tier 1 and Tier II service desk for handling standard Messaging related incidents, work orders and service requests
- Monitor the health of Messaging systems with provided event management tools
- Implement monitoring tools thresholds and conduct proactive event remediation
- Ensure that any latency is identified and mitigated/remediated upon discovery in accordance with required response times
- Monitor availability of system upgrades
- Provide analysis and remediation for DISA Security Technical Implementation Guidelines (STIG) for all responsible technologies in preparation for annual Commanders Cyber Readiness Inspections (CCRI)
Required Skills and Experience:
- Clearance Required: Top Secret
- Highly qualified candidates with a Secret clearance will be considered, but must be eligible upgrade to Top Secret clearance
- A minimum of Security+ is required to start, with the ability to obtain an IAT Level II certification within 180 days
- DoD 8580 IAT III (CASP+CE, CCNP Security, CISA, GCIH, CCSP, GCED, or CISSP (or Associate) (With a Security+ CE candidate will have 180 to Attain IAT III)
- Professional level certification, i.e. MCSA Windows Server 2012/2016/2019, MCSE Core Infrastructure, Microsoft Windows Server Hybrid Administrator
- Thorough working knowledge of Windows Server 2019
- Ability to evaluate the need for any messaging system reconfigurations (minor or significant)
- Ability to maintain policies, procedures, and training plans for messaging system administration and appropriate use
- Thorough working knowledge of Active Directory as it relates to enterprise technologies
- Ability to identify and troubleshoot server performance issues using native Windows Server tools and utilities
- Maintain a “forward looking” posture and work with management to plan for future upgrades, including Exchange migration to the newer versions
Desired Qualifications:
- 7 years related experience
- Strong experience with Exchange 2019, planning, deploying and migration, including experience with mailbox server failover and cluster management
- Firewall, Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) experience configuring, certificate configuring, troubleshooting
- Experience with PowerShell commands needed to manage Active Directory features, roles, mailboxes, performance and troubleshooting
- Experience identifying the need for any Active Directory system reconfigurations (minor or significant)
- Experience maintaining policies, procedures, and training plans for Active Directory system administration and appropriate use
- Experience in building, tuning and maintaining servers in an enterprise environment
- Good communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to follow policies and procedures
- Ability to communicate in a clear speaking voice as well as the ability to respond clearly to questions
- Aptitude to address negative situations and resolve them in a positive manner
- Extensive knowledge of AD architecture - databases and logs, mail routing and protocol support.
- Thorough working knowledge of Windows Server 2019 and 2022

The proposed salary for this position is: $105,500—$158,300 USD.
