The Director of Systems Solutions leads a cross-functional, interdisciplinary team of system, product, and clinical engineering as well as user experience (UX) and human factors engineering (HFE). Across these functions, the director champions system thinking and customer-centric design for the entire Neuromodulation business. Together this organization and engineering management focus on the system design, integration, validation and management of complex systems over their product lifecycle. This includes integrating cross functional stakeholder inputs including technical, scientific, reliability, cost, and clinical subjects.

This leader is responsible for assessing and integrating state-of-the-art systems engineering, including digital systems, and customer-centric design skills as well as establishment of functional best practices into the Neuromodulation (NM) Operating Unit. They will lead and inspire the technical teams to achieve excellence in architectural design, requirements definition, and management through driving best practices in effective flow down of requirements and the team’s management of system interfaces with partner organizations, including hardware, software, and firmware teams. By empowering the team in implementation, journey mapping, user experience research, and UI design, the Director will ensure a cohesive and user-centric approach. Additionally, they will oversee technical leaders that identify and mitigate product risks from concept through delivery, establish system-level roadmaps that address all stakeholder requirements, including technology, markets, and reimbursement. This role is pivotal in integrating and optimizing efforts across product areas, improving time to market while ensuring the best possible user experience and reliability.

Leadership:

  • Recruit, hire, develop and manage leadership staff. Actively assure the retention, recognition, and development of team members throughout the organization.

Talent Development:

  • Develop personal and organizational understanding of emerging systems engineering science for potential application to movement disorders and pain therapies.
  • Drive best-in-class application of Design for Reliability and Manufacturing (DRM) and Human-centered design principles within Systems Solutions and across R&D.
  • Provide administrative management for the Systems Solutions department and staff.
  • Coach, mentor and develop systems, UX/HF and clinical engineering talent in pursuit of holistic, elegant, delightful industry-leading solutions.

Concept & Architecture:

  • Collaborate with Upstream marketing to create strategic direction for technology and platform architecture to ensure superiority in all the Neuromodulation eco-systems.
  • Integrate scientific foundations, technologic opportunities and product aspirations into a coordinated and achievable new product pipeline.
  • Collaborate with a network of clinicians and field representatives to support and advise on direction and decisions.
  • Monitor, collaborate and influence strategic direction and operational decisions, priorities and issues associated with NM technology and products in our internal partner organizations of Medtronic Energy and Component Center, MTC, etc as well as other areas of expertise and interdependence as they emerge over time.
  • Maintain effective communication with the business sector leadership team, team members and functional leadership in all activities required to design, develop and deliver the product successfully.

Human-Centered Design:

  • Champion an evidence-guided, customer-centered, especially patient-centered, approach in all design solutions.
  • Drive adoption and growth of UX best practices and thinking throughout the organization while maintaining excellence in HF and quality compliance aspects of usability.
  • Maintain our strong competency in compliance-based, safety-driven, human factor expertise.

Systems Development:

  • Ensure thorough and complete architectural design and requirements specifications for all products (therapy delivery systems, devices, programmers, digital systems and accessories) in the product line. Ensure these are used to drive leverage across the line and successful implementation on each individual product.
  • Manage the system interfaces with partners organizations such as hardware, software, firmware and IT.
  • Ensure technology is leveraged across the entire product line to achieve efficiency and effective implementation.

System Integration, Verification & Validation:

  • Maintain and grow the strong competency in system integration, systems verification and validation.
  • Drive system integration to burn down execution risk.
  • Define system verification approaches to ensure quality coverage and efficiencies with NM R&D verification testing organizations.
  • Develop test automation skills and competency within the systems engineering function.
  • Partner with customers, patients, and field force to bring real-world experience into system validation.

Must Have: Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelors degree in Engineering or Physical Sciences.
  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience with 7+ years of managerial experience, or Advanced Degree with a minimum 8 years prior relevant experience, minimum of 7+ years of managerial experience.

Nice to Have

  • Medical device experience (Class I, II or III).
  • 5+ years of pertinent-level management experience with responsibility for strategic and tactical management of a complex medical device technology and product pipeline.
  • Demonstrated experience in engineering disciplines including electrical, mechanical, biomedical, software, UI/UX design, industrial design, and human factors.
  • Demonstrated comfort with basic sciences such as biology, physiology and anatomy, the physical sciences including physics and chemistry.
  • Demonstrated experience collaborating across the matrix and leading cross-functional program teams.
  • Demonstrated business acumen, executive presence, and communication skills.
  • Proven skills in quantitative analysis, data-driven decision making.
  • Experience with highly complex/high reliability products and/or technologies.

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD): $187,200.00 - $280,800.00. This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP). This position is eligible for an annual long-term incentive plan. The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).
