The Opportunity

This position works out of our Alameda, CA location in the Abbott Diabetes Care Division, where we are focused on helping people with diabetes manage their health with life-changing products that provide accurate data to drive better-informed decisions. We’re revolutionizing the way people monitor their glucose levels with our new sensing technology.

The Sr Embedded Software Engineer will work independently under limited supervision, performing highly complex and specialized level software project activities in areas such as Development, Tools, Test, Requirements, and/or related areas. Assignments may include, but are not limited to, analyzing requirements, planning and scheduling data, updating and maintaining different software specifications based on analysis of specifications, needs and improvements, as well as troubleshooting, debugging, and maintaining software, test, or tool designs, cases, scripts, procedures, and/or code based on strategic analysis. Functions as lead on project teams and may supervise other engineers.

What you’ll work on

  • Lead software development, verification, and validation; responsible for on-time delivery of high-quality embedded software products that meet budgetary objectives.
  • Design and implement software in current programming languages (e.g. C, C++, C#, Python), with practical experience in embedded C development.
  • Identify parameters, structure, and critical test components. Write, update, or execute test designs, cases, as well as procedures and report results.
  • Working from requirement specifications, develop, maintain, and update detailed design and interface specifications.
  • Participate in and support the implementation, development, enhancements, and modifications to software source code, scripts, and procedures.
  • Debug, troubleshoot, and isolate software problems while offering strategic solutions, analysis, and advice regarding identified issues for future development.
  • Assist in the evaluation of selected designs through testing and full documentation of the results.
  • Work on complex problems where analysis of situations or data requires evaluation of identifiable factors.
  • Exercise judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate action.
  • Contribute to and support gathering, analyzing, and validating requirements.
  • Contribute to and support writing, updating, developing and maintaining Hazard/Risk analysis specifications.
  • Contribute to and support root-cause analysis of failures.
  • Participate in software development, verification, and validation following the guidance of the software lead.
  • Follow approved Design Control procedures for software development in accordance with FDA guidelines.
  • Support all Company initiatives as identified by management and in support of Quality Management Systems (QMS), Environmental Management Systems (EMS), and other regulatory requirements.
  • At this level, it is expected the candidate will have proficiency in software implementation.
  • Interact with QA engineers to ensure that software products are robust and of very high quality.
  • Actively participate in product development teams for the development of new products and services.
  • Readily adjust priorities and work within a team environment for timely completion of common objectives for multiple projects.
  • Resolve significant and/or complex technical issues to empower health through breakthrough technology.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree with 8+ years of experience, Master’s Degree with 7+ years of related experience, or Ph.D. with 2+ years of related experience.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Expert knowledge in current programming languages (e.g., C, C++, C#, Python).
  • Expert knowledge with current development tools (IDEs, debuggers, unit test frameworks, and source control management).
  • Experience with software testing.
  • Experience with software development life cycle processes.
  • Good knowledge of software engineering principles is required.
  • Demonstrated success in technical proficiency, creativity, and independent thought.
  • Experience with structured software development and/or Object Modeling Design is required.
  • Experience with software development of embedded systems for safety-critical products is required.
  • Experience in model-based design (UML or SysML).
  • Strong debugging techniques and experience using debuggers in an embedded environment is required.
  • Excellent troubleshooting skills are a must.
  • Knowledgeable of microprocessor architecture is required.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide guidance to junior team members.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of the principles of quality software engineering as described by software lifecycle development processes that are consistent with ISO, IEEE, or other FDA recognized standards.
  • Knowledge of design controls and regulations for medical device development.
  • Excellent knowledge and experience in communications design and test using Wi-Fi, Bluetooth Low Energy, TCP/IP is a plus.

The base pay for this position is $109,300.00 – $218,500.00. In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
