Engineer-in-training, Process Control

Key Activities and Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical assistance and process control expertise, including problem-solving techniques, for the analysis/investigation of abnormal operating situations and day-to-day application performance issues, and for their subsequent correction.
  • Work with Operations and Technical groups to identify and champion opportunities to improve and sustain operations and profitability.
  • Design, configure and implement DCS/PLC configuration changes as required by projects and MOC’s.
  • Maintain the control database, regulatory, supervisory, advanced applications, and the HMI to ensure operation and integrity of the control and information applications.
  • Maintain the alarm management database. Facilitate alarm rationalizations, initiate alarm changes and bad actor’s resolution.
  • Provides user training and assistance to Operators, Maintenance and Technical personnel to ensure safe and competent use of the DCS and Information systems.
  • Support Operations with on the run activities, turnarounds and startup of the units.
  • Assists with engineering design and review of process control applications/modifications.

Education, Skills and Experience:

  • BSc. in Chemical Engineering with specialization in Process Control.
  • Registered, or immediately eligible to be, with APEGA as an EIT.
  • Minimum of 3 years of related experience.
  • Technical knowledge in process control engineering, process dynamics/modeling, and regulatory, supervisory and advanced/model-based control.
  • Ability to work alone and in a team. Prioritize, risk-assess multiple concurrent tasks, and meet department goals/critical timelines demonstrating agility to provide technical support with quality work.
  • Hands-on experience with DeltaV is an asset.
  • Experience with alarm management and control performance monitoring is an asset.

Schedule and Location:

Schedule - 9 x 80, Week 2 (every second Friday off, while total hours per 2 weeks is 80).

Location - Heartland Petrochemical Complex (HPC), Strathcona County, Alberta.

As this position is identified as security sensitive, employment of a final candidate will be conditional upon completion of pre-employment criminal background check assessments with satisfactory results.
