Department : Technical Projects and Solutions (T&PS)
The T&PS team is a shared services organization supporting the Generation, Transmission, and Distribution (GTD) business units of Southern Company. The team focuses on providing project management and technical expertise. Engineers in this department support GTD activities such as modernization of hydroelectric generating plants, oversight of 3rd-party engineering activities, project management of environmental activities, T&D grid modernization projects, and more.
Expected Duration of Assignment: 1 year contract (reviewed annually)
JOB DESCRIPTION
The Senior Mechanical Engineer 1, 2, or 3 will serve a dual role as both a project manager and an individual contributor. This role requires leading and supporting activities such as:

• Preparing mechanical design scope documents, schedules, and budgets.
• Creating P&IDs, piping isometrics, general arrangement drawings, and equipment or commodity specifications.
• Providing design oversight to ensure compliance with applicable codes and standards.
• Offering technical direction to other engineers, designers, and drafters.
• Effectively communicating with other disciplines, project teams, and plant personnel to ensure project success.

Desired Qualifications:

• Minimum of 10 years of experience in designing new construction or retrofitting power generation or heavy industrial facilities.
• BS in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET-accredited university.
• Physical capability to visit plants, assess current field conditions, and gather necessary information to support design activities.
• Self-motivation, strong organizational skills, and the ability to manage multiple assignments simultaneously.

Candidates at all three levels (Sr. Mechanical Engineer 1, 2, and 3) will be considered based on experience and qualifications.
