Overview
The Edmund Optics (EO) Global Design Team is looking for an Optomechanical Design Engineer II to join our team. In this role, you would work closely with optical designers to develop and analyze optomechanical designs to support our customers for a wide variety of applications and markets such as machine vision, medical diagnostics, and materials processing. The ideal candidate has a degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related field, as well as an understanding of optomechanical design principles, CAD modeling, and print drafting. Prior experience with executing a design project is preferred.
The EO Design Team is diverse and highly collaborative with many opportunities for knowledge sharing and growth. This position provides the opportunity to gain valuable experience from a team of experienced optical and optomechanical designers.
Responsibilities- Execute optomechanical designs and analyses for internal product development and customer support
- Develop technical drawings with appropriate tolerancing per relevant ASME and ISO standards
- Execute design reviews for peer projects independently
- Comply with and have a strong understanding of internal processes and procedures
- Occasionally participate in internal training, development, and mentorship of earlier career designers
- Occasionally promote company expertise externally via publications, volunteer roles, participation in webinars, or other external media/events

Required Skills & Abilities:
- Understanding of mechanical engineering principles as applied to optical systems
- Understanding of and experience with CAD software (Solidworks preferred)
- Understanding of and experience with drafting manufacturing prints
- Knowledge of metal fabrication processes
- Proficiency in communicating technical information
- Strong critical thinking skills
- Ability to receive and apply feedback appropriately
- Ability to strike an appropriate balance of independence and asking for support
- Good intra-personal communication skills
- Good time management skills
- U.S. Citizenship or permanent residence required
Education/Experience:
Minimum BS in Mechanical Engineering, or other relevant field, and/or equivalent experience; 4+ years' experience in the optical industry
Physical Requirements:
Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time; ability to travel; work in office and manufacturing settings.
