General Summary

The Section of Clinical Sciences in the Division of Rheumatology is seeking a Database Analyst I to work closely with Principal Investigators, database administrators, data managers, and potential collaborators to support the department in collecting, organizing, retrieving, tracking, and analyzing data related to a new effort to establish a bioinformatics platform. Responsibilities include organizing and managing databases/data marts, extracting data from a variety of sources, preparing data for analyses, and documenting all aspects of data warehouses, data marts, and related programs and procedures.

Analyst will write programs using SQL as well as other established programming languages. The position requires the ability to develop an in-depth understanding of our data and data structures as well as the ability to translate specifications into programming logic.

Primary Responsibilities

  1. Design, build, test, and maintain efficient, reusable, and reliable SQL Scripts and database designs.
  2. Support all phases of release lifecycle – Analysis, Design, Development, Testing, Deployment, and Support.
  3. Confirm project requirements by studying user requirements; conferring with others on project team.
  4. Work closely with investigators to meet requests in a timely manner.
  5. Develop recording systems assuring that the flow of data is tracked in an accurate and timely fashion.
  6. Develop, maintain, and improve MS Access databases for research projects in consultation with researchers.
  7. Document all aspects of data management, such as database structure and related data cleaning procedures. Maintain data dictionary and metadata.
  8. Meet and work closely with other staff members and attend larger study and staff meetings.
  9. Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  1. Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field.
  2. Experience writing and editing complex SQL scripts and stored procedures is essential.
  3. Experience working with MS SQL Server, Excel, and ACCESS.
  4. Previous experience in research is preferred.
  5. Must have interpersonal skills to interact effectively with persons of all levels.
  6. SQL programming is required.
  7. Data management skills, including the creation, modification, and merging of computerized databases in a variety of studies is required.
  8. Knowledge of medical and analytical terminology.
  9. Willingness to learn new pipelines and methods for data analyses, e.g., natural language processing.
  10. Knowledge of clinical epidemiology and biostatistics.
  11. Must be able to prioritize and organize work responsibilities in order to meet deadlines.
  12. Must possess a great deal of integrity to maintain confidentiality. Must demonstrate accuracy in maintaining data.
  13. Must be able to make independent judgments under general supervision for the above-mentioned job duties and responsibilities.
  14. Knowledge of Python and Java programming language or similar preferred but not required.
  15. Experience with database ETL preferred but not required.
