Northrop Grumman Mission Systems is seeking a Principal / Sr. Principal Magnetic Bearing Lead Engineer based out of Sunnyvale, CA. This role is part of the advanced development team that will be developing next generation technology and architecture for propulsion and power generation machinery for US Navy submarines. The successful candidate will be collaborative, open, transparent, and team-oriented with a focus on team empowerment & shared responsibility, flexibility, continuous learning, and a culture of automation.

What you'll get to do:

The Magnetic Bearing Lead Engineer will lead a team of experienced Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) and junior engineers in electromagnetics and design to explore, design, develop, and test new magnetic bearing technology and architecture. This position requires the ability to lead a multidiscipline team, manage and complete tasks within budget and schedule, and turn ideas into reality.

Basic Qualifications for Principal level:

  • Bachelor's of Science Degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering or related Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) discipline with 5 years of relevant experience; or Master's Degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering or related Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) discipline with 3 years of relevant experience; or a PhD in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering or related Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) discipline with no relevant experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in Electric Machine design and analysis.
  • Experience implementing designs.
  • Solid understanding of electromagnetic principles for power generator or force production.
  • Solid understanding of construction / manufacturing methods of electric machines.
  • Demonstrated technical team leadership.
  • U.S. Citizen with ability to obtain a DoD security clearance.

  • Bachelor's of Science Degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering or related Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) discipline with 9 years of relevant experience; or Master's Degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering or related Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) discipline with 7 years of relevant experience; or a PhD in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering or related Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) discipline with 4 years of relevant experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in Electric Machine design and analysis.
  • Experience implementing designs.
  • Solid understanding of electromagnetic principles for power generator or force production.
  • Solid understanding of construction / manufacturing methods of electric machines.
  • Demonstrated technical team leadership.
  • U.S. Citizen with ability to obtain a DoD security clearance.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master of Science or Ph.D. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Degree.
  • 7+ years of electrical machine and/or inverter / drive engineering experience.
  • Experience with software for system evaluation such as Matlab Simulink, Simplorer, etc.
  • Electromagnetic analysis experience with FEA tools such as ANSYS Maxwell, Altair Flux 2D/3D, or similar type of electromagnetic analysis software.
  • Experience with electric machines for marine propulsion applications.
  • Experience with naval nuclear propulsion programs.

Salary Range: $107,300 - $160,900

Salary Range 2: $133,000 - $199,600
