Summary:

Selective Insurance is looking for a Manager, Software Engineering responsible for delivering software solutions and information systems to solve Commercial Lines business and customer needs. This individual will oversee a team consisting of software engineers and leads responsible for supporting applications that are of strategic importance to the corporation. The primary responsibility of this team is to ensure solutions are aligned to business strategies and to provide technical leadership and implementation support to application delivery teams for new projects and enhancements.

Job Responsibilities:

  1. Manages a portfolio of business application projects for Commercial business.
  2. Meets with other managers (IT and business) to discuss system requirements, specifications, costs, and timelines.
  3. Establishes and maintains relationships with business and IT counterparts to ensure proper collaboration.
  4. Accountable for project scope, schedule, and budget ensuring commitments and progress are monitored closely and communicated clearly.
  5. Forecasting and allocation of team members across several development projects.
  6. Regular reporting of key metrics like resource allocation, software defects, productivity, and efficiency.
  7. Trains, supervises, assigns projects to, evaluates, and is responsible for hiring/termination of information technology personnel and contracting staff to design, engineer, and implement systems software.
  8. Talent management of team members to ensure high morale and appropriate advancement of individual goals and career aspirations.
  9. Participates in the evaluation, acquisition, and implementation of vendor software to support business processes.
  10. Troubleshoots technology issues.
  11. Participation in and well-planned implementation of established quality improvement initiatives and processes.
  12. In conjunction with the architecture group, establishes and enforces design and coding standards.
  13. Evaluates and recommends application development tools.

Job Qualifications:

  1. College degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, Business, or related field preferred.
  2. Prior management/supervisory experience with information technology personnel and offshore/onsite consultants preferred.
  3. Prior hands-on application development experience using web-based technologies and languages is preferred.
  4. Solid knowledge of surrounding technologies including design patterns and modern standards.
  5. Great leadership skills to work effectively with peers within and across organizations.
  6. Solid written and interpersonal communication with the ability to deliver compelling presentations.
  7. Strong ability to manage and execute on multiple project timelines and manage competing priorities.
  8. Experience in Property Casualty insurance a plus.

Salary range: $131,600 - $188,000. The actual base salary is based on geographic location, and the range is representative of salaries for this role throughout Selective's footprint. Additional considerations include the candidate's qualifications and experience.
