REQUIREMENT
The Scientist or Engineer will propose and carry out research and development (R&D) projects and technology and product developments in metal additive manufacturing (AM), including but not necessarily limited to Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) processes, process monitoring, and applications. In this role, the scientist or engineer will serve as Principal Investigator (PI) or Co-PI for externally funded projects, will spearhead internal technology and product developments, and will represent ARCTOS in the AM community through technical presentations and publications. This position is a direct report to the Director of Industrial Innovation Technologies, working as an integral member of the multidisciplinary ARCTOS Industrial Innovation Laboratory team.
The ideal candidate would be a recent Ph.D. or post-doctoral researcher with high degree of scientific curiosity, hands-on experience with AM systems, design and analysis abilities, and good verbal and written communication skills. This position is ideal for a self- starter who works well in a team environment and is eager to collaborate internally and externally to expand their skill sets and make a scientific impact in the AM field. Lesser or more educated or experienced candidates may be considered, however recent experience in metal AM is a must, preferably in LPBF technologies.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead the execution of R&D projects in additive manufacturing and related areas as PI/Co-PI.
- Conceive and pitch innovative R&D project concepts through proposals for external funding.
- Engage industrial and government customers to understand technology gaps and opportunities.
- Collaborate with program managers and supporting technical staff to meet all project requirements.
- Stay abreast of technology trends and partnering opportunities in the additive manufacturing arena.
- Work with ARCTOS lab leadership to comply with all safety, security, and contract requirements.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
- Planning, setup and running of Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) machines
- LPBF process monitoring
- Interpretation of metallurgical results for metal additive manufacturing specimens
- Python or other suitable programming or data analysis package
- Computer Aided Design (CAD) - e.g., SolidWorks
- Knowledge of Direct Energy Deposition, and Electron Beam Powder Bed Fusion is a plus
- Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) knowledge is also a plus
EDUCATIONAL, CLEARANCE AND CERTIFICATION
- Scientific or engineering degree in relevant field (e.g., mechanical, electrical, optical engineering, or physics, chemistry, materials science); Ph.D. or equivalent is a plus.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience performing metal additive manufacturing research.
- U.S. citizenship with security clearance eligibility (as required).
PHYSICAL/WORKING ENVIRONMENT
- Laboratory work will be performed in research and manufacturing environment, requires vision and hearing ability to operate machinery with visual and audio alerts, and physical ability to lift up to 35 pounds.
TRAVEL
- Nominally 10-15% travel anticipated in support of project activities and technical conferences. All travel will be performed under the guidelines of Federal Travel Regulations and/or Joint Travel Regulations.
