A Day in the Life of a Senior Civil Engineer
You are at the forefront of brainstorming creative solutions for challenging projects. You lead, support, and mentor an interdisciplinary team to deliver multimodal transportation infrastructure in a wide range of contexts from roadway reconstructions and streetscapes in highly urban settings to signature trail projects in suburban and rural areas that highlight and enhance the natural environment. You use programs such as AutoCAD in order to fulfill production work on your projects. You will share your knowledge with staff and clients, to develop feasibility studies, concept plans, and construction documents, as well mentor your colleagues to ensure that our projects are consistently of the highest quality.
You manage projects and participate in business development pursuits the Pacific Northwest as well as across our North American offices. Your job can sometimes be challenging, but you get to work with a close-knit team that is passionate about the work and the communities that you serve.
We are targeting a salary range of $125,000 to $150,000 for this position. For exceptionally qualified candidates who exceed job requirements, we will consider additional compensation; please reach out to with questions.
Work Schedule for a Senior Civil Engineer
This full-time position typically works a flexible schedule of 40 hours a week. We also provide employees with the flexibility and necessary equipment to work from home 2-3 days per week. The Seattle office of Toole Design is conveniently located in the heart of Seattle's Business District blocks from the Pike Place Market, Seattle Art Museum, Central Public Library, and Waterfront. The office is easily accessed on foot, by bicycle, and via transit or ferry. RapidRide lines C, D and E stop right in front, and multiple Sound Transit light rail and Sounder Commuter rail lines are a short walk to the office. Bike lanes are close by on 2nd and 4th avenues.

Requirements
Qualifications of a Senior Civil Engineer:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in civil engineering
  • Professional engineering license
  • 10+ years of experience developing construction documents for roadways or highways
  • 2+ years of experience serving in a project or design management role
  • Experience managing and/or overseeing work of junior staff
  • A broad knowledge base in civil engineering, with specific experience in grading, drainage design and 3D modeling, roadway geometric design, and design of accessible public spaces
  • Experience in preparing transportation and local agency documents
  • General experience in coordinating utility and right-of-way impacts and street lighting, traffic signal, and landscape/hardscape layout
  • General knowledge of project performance metrics and strategies for monitoring them
  • Proficiency in Computer Automated Design (AutoCAD or MicroStation) and a design software (Civil 3D, GEOPAK or InRoads) is required
  • Experience reviewing construction plans and providing constructive feedback
  • Experience developing construction documents, cost estimates and specifications
  • Interest in multimodal and active transportation issues and design (specifically for bicycle, pedestrian, Safe Routes to School and/or transit integration) for all ages and abilities
It would be a plus if you have any of the following:
  • Exposure to construction management
  • Experience analyzing and designing stormwater infrastructure is a plus
  • Experience using stormwater design software such as WWHM
  • Experience with business development activities such as tracking projects, developing proposals, and participating in interviews.
  • Experience working on engineering projects in one or more of the following agencies: Seattle Department of Transportation, Washington State Department of Transportation
  • Experience delivering federally funded projects
  • Familiarity with national and/or local transportation engineering standards, including the City of Seattle, WSDOT, AASHTO, MUTCD, NACTO, Highway Capacity Manual, Highway Safety Manual and/or ITE guidance documents
