Senior Software Development Engineer, AWS Identity, Security Token Service

The Amazon Web Services (AWS) Identity team builds, operates, and innovates the identity, authentication, and authorization stack for the AWS cloud. Our mission is to push the technical boundaries to enable AWS customers to run their business workloads confidently and securely. As part of this mission, we leverage customer obsession and technologies to help customers set appropriate access controls across all their AWS environments.

We are seeking a software developer engineer to be part of our team to build solutions on a global scale, own their systems end to end, and influence the direction of technology used by all AWS services around the world. In this role, you will have the opportunity to drive mission critical projects, work with senior and principal engineers, and help mentor more junior team members.

As an SDE on our team you will:

  1. Create and collaborate in the design, implementation, and deployment of systems and services.
  2. Work and grow with talented teams delivering impactful projects.
  3. Functionally decompose complex problems into simple, straightforward solutions while understanding system interdependencies and limitations.
  4. Share your knowledge of the most effective performance, scalability, architecture, and engineering patterns and methods.

AWS has the most services and more features within those services than any other cloud provider—from infrastructure technologies like compute, storage, and databases to emerging technologies, such as machine learning and artificial intelligence, data lakes and analytics, and Internet of Things. Whether its Identity features such as access management and sign on, cryptography, console, builder & developer tools, and even projects like automating all of our contractual billing systems, AWS Platform is always innovating with the customer in mind. The AWS IAM platform sustains over a billion transactions per second.

Our team also puts a high value on work-life balance. Striking a healthy balance between your personal and professional life is crucial to your happiness and success here, which is why we aren’t focused on how many hours you spend at work or online. Instead, we’re happy to offer a flexible schedule so you can have a more productive and well-balanced life—both in and outside of work.

Key job responsibilities:

  1. Design and develop state-of-the-art approaches to solve challenging technical problems, often ones not solved before, at every layer of the stack.
  2. Build high-quality, highly available, always-on products.
  3. Cultivate engineering and operational excellence through metrics and continuous learning.
  4. Provide thought leadership and establish technical vision for the team.
  5. Use software engineering best practices to ensure a high standard of quality for all of the team deliverables.

A day in the life:

  1. As you design and code solutions to help our team drive efficiencies in software architecture, you’ll create metrics, implement automation and other improvements, and resolve the root cause of software defects.
  2. Build high-impact solutions to deliver to our large customer base.
  3. Participate in design discussions, code review, and communicate with internal and external stakeholders.
  4. Work cross-functionally to help drive business decisions with your technical input.
  5. Work in a fast-paced development environment, where you’re always working on the most important tasks.

About the team:
We’re the AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM) data plane team. We build and operate one of the largest and most important software systems in the world – one that is used by every AWS customer, makes authorization decisions about every AWS API request, and needs to scale with all other AWS services.

Security is the #1 concern and requirement for customers as they evaluate moving their workloads and resources to the cloud. AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM) enables customers to secure their workloads in the cloud by providing authentication and authorization mechanisms along with customer-facing tooling. With the growth of AWS, the workloads and access patterns keep evolving and therefore demanding the next order of magnitude for scalability.

Our team is dedicated to supporting new members. We have a broad mix of experience levels and tenures, and we’re building an environment that celebrates knowledge-sharing and mentorship. Our senior members enjoy one-on-one mentoring and thorough, but kind, code reviews. We care about your career growth and strive to assign projects that help our team members develop their engineering expertise so you feel empowered to take on more complex tasks in the future.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. 5+ years of non-internship professional software development experience.
  2. 5+ years of programming with at least one software programming language experience.
  3. 5+ years of leading design or architecture (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience.
  4. Experience as a mentor, tech lead or leading an engineering team.
  5. 5+ years of full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations experience.
  6. Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent.
