BRIEF POSTING DESCRIPTION:

The P YM POWER PLANT MECH ENGRG Department of the P POWER SUPPLY ENGINEERING Division at Hawaiian Electric Company has 1 Management vacancy available. (Role: Professional)

JOB FUNCTION:

Under direct supervision of higher-level professional engineers, performs design, project engineering, project management and general engineering duties in support of the capital construction programs of HECO, MECO and HELCO.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Independently evaluates, selects, and applies standard engineering techniques, procedures and criteria using judgment in making minor adaptations and modifications. Assignments have clear and specified objectives and require the investigation of a limited number of variables.
2. Receives instruction on specific assignment objectives, complex features, and possible solutions. Assistance is furnished on unusual problems and work is reviewed for application of sound professional judgment.
3. Prepares plans, layouts, design calculations and related engineering design in accordance with applicable codes, ordinances, and regulations.
4. Conducts engineering studies, economic studies, and field inspections, and prepares associated reports.
5. Prepares cost estimates, cash flows, schedules, material and construction specifications and construction contracts for projects assigned.
6. Performs project engineering and project management functions on selected projects.
7. Coordinates design efforts by consulting engineers, evaluates proposals and bids for engineering services and equipment and makes recommendations.
8. Participates in Company emergency response activities as assigned, including any activities required to prepare for such emergency response.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge Requirements

1. Thorough knowledge of the theories and principles of engineering acquired through advanced college level courses or equivalent experience.
2. Working knowledge of the principles and practices of engineering design, project engineering, project management and construction methods associated with electric utility facilities normally acquired through extensive (11 years) experience.
3. Working knowledge of personal computers and/or mainframe systems and related software applications such as spreadsheets, word processing, etc.

Skills Requirements

1. Must have or be able to qualify for a State of Hawaii driver's license. Must meet the standards for required driving positions stated in the Hiring Standards for Required Driving Positions policy.
2. Good oral and written communication skills.
3. Ability to remain flexible in a demanding work environment and to adapt to rapidly changing priorities.
4. Strong interpersonal skills to influence and persuade various groups or individuals.

Experience Requirements

1. Extensive (11 years) experience in the design of additions, modifications, extensions, upgrades and rearrangements of company generation, transmission, substation, and communication and control systems and facilities, and three (3) years design experience must be in a specific and relevant area of expertise.
2. A BS degree in engineering in a relevant discipline from an accredited engineering school may be substituted for eight (8) years of experience.
