Our Building Science team in Portland, Oregon is looking for a Structural Engineer to design repairs for damaged and deteriorated existing buildings, design of new buildings and additions, renovations to existing buildings and to perform building condition assessments and evaluations. The role will require preparation of structural contract documents and collaboration with our Building Science Specialists and Structural Engineers. As well, coordination will be needed with our Architect and Contractor clients, and other teams within the firm. The position will provide the structural support for a wide range of projects, including commercial, mission critical, residential, industrial, education, and municipal projects.

The role of a Structural Engineer is to work with general direction on small and medium complexity/sized projects, and as a team member on large projects under the guidance of a Senior Structural Engineer. The Structural Engineer should be able to evaluate, select, specify, and engineer all engineered systems or products for a project. A Structural Engineer will perform a variety of tasks which includes calculations, preparation of construction documents, and field work. Responsibilities:

  • Development of structural design through sketches, electronic models, diagrams, and other visual formats for steel, concrete, masonry, and wood framed structures.
  • Direct Auto CAD team for drawing preparation and review deliverables prior to submission to client.
  • Coordinate with other disciplines (architectural, mechanical, plumbing, electrical, civil, etc.) to ensure compatibility with the design intent.
  • Attend site visits related to pre-design information gathering, construction and postconstruction review.
  • Lead project coordination meetings with internal team members and/or external consultants.
  • Participate in meetings with owners and contractor, sub-contractors, and vendors.
  • Assist senior staff with developing and managing the project scope, budget, staffing and schedule.
  • Perform and oversee the performance of calculations using company standard software, and proprietary manufacturer software.
  • Participate in constructability review.
  • Conduct quality assurance and quality control on own projects.
  • Assist in the development of new standards and specifications for the structural group.
  • Work on multiple projects.
  • Review shop drawings and submittals, responds to requests for information, prepares site observation reports, and performs other contract administration tasks.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Civil or Structural Engineering is required.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer is preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience is required.
  • Requisite knowledge and application of structural material design codes, standards, and applicable building codes.
  • General understanding of all phases of project document production and the relationship between drawings and specifications.
  • Strong knowledge of structural systems means and methods, materials, and industry standards.
  • Ability to check the work of others for accuracy and completeness and manage time to meet project budget and schedule.
  • Ability to participate and collaborate in project team setting and to engage in creative and critical thought.
  • Thorough understanding of structural engineering concepts and ability to effectively communicate ideas to others.
  • Requires understanding of Microsoft Office Suite and Bluebeam; Prefer experience with Enercalc, Mathcad, and various proprietary structural design software, as well as structure finite element analysis such as Risa 3D.
  • Interested in working both in the office and the field environment.
  • Ability to perform outdoor physical duties while doing building investigation work.
  • Valid driver's license and access to a vehicle.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong, interpersonal and presentation skills.
  • Able to work in a team environment and to handle multiple projects with the ability to effectively prioritize tasks.
  • Organized and detail-oriented.
  • Ability to mentor technical development of others.
  • Works well with minimal direct supervision.
  • Exercises independent judgment.
