Principal Project Engineer

As a Principal Project Engineer/Manager based in San Diego, CA, you will collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team on significant and meaningful projects in the region. Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering (BSCE) and California Registration as a Professional Civil Engineer (or ability to obtain within 6 months).
- Minimum of 8-12 years of relevant experience, or equivalent experience of 12-15 years in the civil engineering industry.
- At least 3 years of management experience, including the supervision of technical staff.
Key Competencies
- Strong independent thought, decision-making abilities, and demonstrated leadership skills.
- Proven experience in project management and establishing strong relationships with clients, public-agency personnel, and in-house staff.
Ideal Candidate
- Engineers who have remained with a private land development firm for 4-5 years in their previous position.
- Designers with experience creating civil plans and managing a team of designers in a project management capacity.
Managerial Responsibilities
- Oversee construction documents and contracts.
- Manage construction support and field coordination.
- Develop and maintain project schedules and budgets.
- Prepare contracts, fee proposals, and scopes of work.
- Lead client and public-agency interactions.
- Supervise and support design and technical staff.
Technical Responsibilities
- Conduct conceptual and preliminary engineering design studies, considering land use, zoning, site constraints, infrastructure needs, and regulatory requirements.
- Prepare and process regulatory and public improvement plans (both private and public).
- Conduct constructability reviews and provide construction support services.
- Comprehensive knowledge of jurisdictional codes, standards, and procedures in California and the region is strongly preferred.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD/Civil 3D is required.
Additional Skills
- Apply civil engineering principles, techniques, and procedures in design.
- Working knowledge of business and management principles related to strategic planning, resource allocation, leadership, and team coordination.
- Ability to lead a design team, set realistic goals, and make decisions independently.
- Expertise in jurisdictional processing and negotiation.
- Strong leadership, communication, and time management skills.
- Respectful and effective in interactions with co-workers, public agencies, and clients.
- Proficiency in CAD for preparing exhibits, studies, and final plans.
