Senior Embedded Software Engineer – Heart Failure Therapy

At Abbott R&D’s Heart Failure division, we engineer meaningful products that save and extend the lives of heart failure patients. We need your expertise to help us engineer the next generation of class III medical devices (e.g., Bluetooth enabled implants, wireless charging, remote monitoring with the cloud, telemedicine).

We are seeking a talented, enthusiastic, and dependable Senior Embedded Software Engineer who will collaborate with our systems, human factors, cybersecurity, and regulatory teams to understand the needs of our products and patients, and then develop best-in-class firmware within a rigorous Agile process.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Develop C/C++ embedded software for Class III medical devices.
  2. Develop high-risk/high complexity-level software project tasks under limited supervision.
  3. Work from requirement specifications and architectural guidelines to design and implement software and test strategies.
  4. Collaborate with other developers in software design, implementation, unit testing, and debugging.
  5. Debug, troubleshoot, and isolate software problems and provide strategic advice regarding identified issues for future development.
  6. Participate in cybersecurity risk assessment, requirements development, and implementation of cybersecurity features and best practices.
  7. Present or contribute to presentations at design reviews; document and resolve issues as directed.
  8. Contribute to and support various development and test phase efforts.
  9. Write and update requirement specifications for an assigned area.
  10. Comply with U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations, other regulatory requirements, company policies, operating procedures, processes, and task assignments.
  11. Maintain positive and cooperative communications and collaboration with all levels of employees, customers, contractors, and vendors.
  12. Perform other related duties and responsibilities, as assigned.

Experience and Education Requirements:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
  2. 5+ years developing progressively more complex software in C/C++, with at least two years developing software in an embedded environment for microcontrollers.
  3. At least one year developing embedded software for medical devices or other highly regulated fields.
  4. Solid understanding of formal software development methodologies and source code management.
  5. Experience working in an iterative (Agile, Scrum, Kanban) development process.
  6. Experience in software risk-based design control processes such as FDA 62304.

Preferred Qualifications / Education:

  1. Master’s degree in computer science, electrical engineering, or biomedical engineering may substitute for some experience.
  2. Experience with GIT for version control and Jira for issue tracking.
  3. Ability to provide guidance, mentorship, and task leadership to junior team members.
  4. Experience operating, installing, and configuring Linux operating systems.
  5. Fluent in embedded design and implementation patterns including multithreading, asynchronous I/O, inter-process messaging, error handling, event handlers, semaphores/mutexes, interrupts, and processes.
  6. Experience developing custom agents utilizing the full BLE stack (5.0+).
  7. Experience with unit- and integration-level testing and automated testing.
  8. Ability to communicate technical solutions and issues clearly to management and project members.
  9. Experience within an FDA regulated medical field.
  10. Experience analyzing and debugging embedded systems using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and other appropriate equipment.
  11. Experience in implantable technologies.
  12. Knowledge of hardware breadboards and PC hardware system interfaces and embedded systems.
  13. Experience with BLE 5.0 is a plus.
