Sonos was founded to make it easy for customers to play any song in any room of the home. We are working on a new content navigation experience that makes it more enjoyable than ever to find and discover entertainment across a variety of media types (music, podcast, video, etc) and streaming services. As a Senior Backend Engineer focused on content management, you will contribute to a system that ingests, organizes, and retrieves the data that powers Sonos content navigation experiences.

This role is hybrid

This role requires in-office time of 1 to 2 times a week. Qualified candidates must currently live within commuting distance of our Seattle, Santa Barbara, or Boston office locations.

What You’ll Do

  • Work closely with our engineers, designers, and product managers for developing tools to serve and curate content metadata at Sonos
  • Contribute to data ingestion pipelines that clean, merge and aggregate data from various internal and external sources
  • Contribute to APIs that power our internal tools and user-facing apps
  • Contribute to building a scalable, multi-region cloud architecture that powers multiple Sonos experiences
  • Contribute to cloud services that store and retrieve personal user data such as playlists and preferences


What You’ll Need

Basic Qualifications

  • Qualified candidates must currently live within commutable distance from the Seattle, Santa Barbara, or Boston office
  • 4+ years of professional experience building data storage and retrieval systems in areas like music or video, ecommerce, healthcare, manufacturing and supply chain, social media, etc.
  • Experience building APIs to query and expose data over the Internet
  • Experience with one or more relational and/or NoSQL databases
  • Experience with data caching strategies at various levels of the cloud software stack
  • Experience with search technologies, including major commercial and open source implementation options
  • Experience hosting data and services with cloud computing providers such as AWS or Azure
  • Experience building and scaling relational and/or NoSQL databases in multiple cloud regions
  • Experience with performance analysis and debugging
  • Familiarity with one or more major programming languages used to build web services (Node, Typescript, Javascript, SQL, C#, Java, etc)
  • A willingness to delve into and learn new systems as part of a growing team
  • Ability to work with other Sonos teams and external partners to design systems that are mutually beneficial


Preferred Qualifications

  • Specific experience in the entertainment content (music or video) metadata domains
  • Experience designing ‘recommendation’ systems
  • Familiarity with data integrity concepts like privacy, security, and respect for copyright holders
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in computer science or related field


At Sonos we consider a wide range of factors when determining compensation, which may lead individual compensation to vary depending on job related qualifications, skills, and experience. All full time employees are eligible for merit increases, discretionary bonuses, and equity. Our job postings may span more than one career level and the base pay range may be modified in the future based on changing market conditions. The starting base pay for this role for all US candidates is between:

$152,000 and $168,800
