Position Summary: As a member of the IPEX Automation team, the Automation Engineer will be responsible for Leading, Supporting, Implementing, and Managing Automation projects and driving innovation advancements.
Responsible for definition, creation, and driving implementation of Shape Automation Technical Roadmap and the implementation of all automation initiatives as Shape. In this context the Automation Engineer has the overall coordination responsibility for conceptualizing, developing, and bringing to fruition cost effective, innovative, lean, and robust automation initiatives to all areas of Shape.
Essential Job Functions include, but not limited to, the following
  • Develop simulations, presentations, and drawings of concepts, equipment, and layouts for automation initiatives (including Project AUTO), driving/supporting automation actions for all Shape products, processes, and equipment.
  • Support the creation and management of an automation technology strategy with roadmaps to define, innovate, and implement the next generation of automation standards for processing, post-processing and assembly processes at Shape, in close cooperation with Engineering and Manufacturing departments, Industrial Process EXcellence networks and Operations.
  • Work with operations and assembly automation team to define, develop, validate, and implement advanced automation development projects related to post-processing and assembly
  • Identify what technologies should be sourced internally or externally and work and partner with suppliers to gain innovative benefits and thus optimizing cost/performance
  • Continually monitor automation technologies and market trends to seek new automation technology opportunities that may be appropriate for Shape, but are not currently addressed, and to propose opportunities to capitalize on those opportunities.
  • Continually develop evolving simplified post processing and assembly processes and equipment bringing lower maintenance needs, significantly lower equipment costs, lower operational costs (including an LCC strategy), more flexibility and scalability, incremental investment opportunities, and reduced spare parts requirements.
  • Ensure the implementation of all relevant SES principles (including the 20 SES Equipment Design guidelines)
  • Check and take advantage of relevant lessons learned from similar programs
  • Actively supports program and launch team activities.
  • Coordinates and maintains periodic supplier/vendor performance reports.
  • Support all Divisions of Shape and its subsidiaries.
  • Additional functions not specifically outlined in this positions description as directed by the leader.

  • Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related degree from an ABET accredited program or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum 5-10 years' experience in automation development and integration
  • Preferred 5 years' experience working within an automation equipment integrator including experience with machine integration and construction, commissioning, and overall automation project execution
  • Experience working in an engineering or manufacturing environment.
  • Familiar with weld verification methods, weld testing methodology, and measuring devices.
  • Familiar with Fanuc robots, handling and arc tool.
  • GMAW and GTAW experience required.
  • Experience in 6 axis articulating arm robotics.
  • Proven proficiency at robot programming, I/O management, and troubleshooting robotic systems logic.
  • Experience trouble-shooting mechanical systems including pneumatics, tooling issues, measurement feedback systems, and basic design robustness.
  • Basic understanding of controls and servo systems.
  • Ability to troubleshoot equipment.
  • Strong mechanical and/or electrical aptitude.
  • Familiar with RIA Robotic Safety Standards.
  • Robot programming experience primarily with Fanuc. Extensive knowledge of Fanuc RoboGuide software, and Fanuc based Teach Pendant programming applications.
  • FANUC Robotics Handling Tool operation and iRVision knowledge is a plus.
  • PLC/HMI programming experience with an emphasis on GE & Allen Bradley
  • Working knowledge of information-based communication technologies, including TCP/iP, WiFi, ethernet IP, and RFID.
  • Experience with Machine Vision systems 2D and 3D (Cognex, Keyence, Omron, Fanuc)
  • Experience with different fieldbus architectures such as DeviceNet, Ethernet/IP, Profinet, Profibus
  • Knowledge of Electrical Standards (NFPA79, National Electric code, UL508A)
  • Knowledge of Safety standards (ANSI/RIA15.06, OSHA).
  • Material Handling systems experience required, preferably with multiple suppliers.
  • Strongly prefer experience in cost estimation of automated systems, preferably with multiple suppliers.
  • Demonstrated critical thinking skills, ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment.
  • Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong innovation background in supporting the development of new equipment and methods of assembly.
  • Equipment and tooling design experience preferred
  • Ability to effectively interact with team members and customers at all levels.
  • Promote collaboration with internal and external customers at all levels
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Proficient at problem solving using 4c methodology
  • Ability to interpret and analyze technical prints, procedures, and customer specifications.
  • Independent and organized work style effectively manages time and prioritizes multiple tasks.
  • Ability to create project plans and timelines based on input from other team members.
  • Understand task dependencies and each task's potential to impact project timing.
  • Prior experience managing or coaching less senior team members.
  • Be able to travel as needed.
