Essential Job Responsibilities:

The key job duties of the Senior Manager-Engineering position include supervisory responsibility for projects to support the Conventional Line of Business improvements, existing facility enhancements and new project development.

The responsibilities will span from concept to delivery including strategic planning and scope development; collaborating in the environmental and regulatory permitting and project approvals process; management of corporate, consultant and contractor personnel resources to market, plan, design, permit and deliver the project; and responsibility for project budget and schedule. The position will also oversee coordinating with a wide variety of maritime and inland related businesses, local government agencies and regional regulatory agencies to promote our organization and its stakeholders’ best interests.

  1. Identify and follow through on business opportunities by outlining a development program plan including market assessments; initial layout concepts; permitting, design, schedule, and cost requirements.
  2. Oversee and manage a comprehensive portfolio of infrastructure projects, including planning, design, permitting and delivery.
  3. Partner with the Business Development team to help determine and assess proposed development feasibility, costs and financial feasibility of proposed projects, acquisitions, or initiatives.
  4. Support the Sustainability group in the assessment and incorporation of ESG objectives to promote sustainable operations and emission reduction at existing, upgraded, and new-build facilities.
  5. Support the Grants & Sustainability Manager in the assessment and pursuit of grant opportunities, grant life cycle reporting and administration.
  6. Plans, organizes, and directs program management services, including developing and implementing policies and procedures; overseeing projects and initiatives; and assisting Management of the aspects of the Division related to facility development.
  7. Collaborates with staff to achieve planned objectives through teamwork; develops capability and capacity through support, coaching and feedback; arranges for appropriate staff training and development.
  8. Engage with in-house and consultant resources as necessary so an informed decision to move forward and pursue an opportunity is developed and vetted before implementation.
  9. Independently research and prepare written reports including, but not limited to, proposals; technical reports; project alternative analyses; and senior management and board updates.
  10. Partner with other internal company departments as necessary.
  11. Leads and supports negotiations with external stakeholders on behalf of the organization.
  12. Develop and maintain consultant resources and relationships to support projects.
  13. Strong understanding of relevant cargo handling technology, land use requirements, marine and inland transportation and infrastructure needs required to achieve core organizational business objectives.
  14. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Mechanical, Structural Engineering from an accredited college or university. Post graduate degree preferred.
  2. Registered professional engineer, other professional certifications such as PMP is highly desirable.
  3. A minimum of 10 years engineering experience in the port/maritime industry with demonstrated increasing responsibility for work products.
  4. Must have responsible experience managing a unit, department, or team.
  5. Program management experience with complex projects and initiatives involving commercial marine terminal/facility development; road and rail infrastructure; site design and land use planning.
  6. Extensive knowledge and experience with state and federal permitting; environmental regulations and studies/investigations necessary to support project development; internal and outside stakeholder engagement; finance strategies; and preparation of reports and documentation of actions taken.
  7. Business acumen, including a fundamental understanding of how various aspects of the SSA Marine business operates, then using that knowledge effectively to make logical business recommendations in the context of the role.
  8. Ability to develop and manage studies, metrics, and reporting processes to accurately convey key performance indicators to stakeholders.
  9. Demonstrate effective analytics, reporting and communications with internal and external stakeholders using intermediate skills in the Microsoft Office suite of applications.

Work Environment:

  1. Required hybrid in-office work schedule.
  2. Must be able to travel – up to 40% to domestic and international locations.
