Engineering Director – Bakersfield, CA

Job Summary
The Engineering Director will lead the team of engineers, inspectors, laboratory technicians, and technical document control staff and contractors, to support production at Bakersfield Renewable Fuels.

Essential Functions

  1. Manage team of 30 engineers, inspectors, laboratory technicians, and technical document control staff and contractors, ensuring that employees have the right resources, tools, and support to achieve their job.
  2. Provide technical input and specifications for commercial negotiations of product offtake partners and feedstock providers, including performance guarantee evaluations.
  3. Provide technical support to assure regulatory compliance efforts are met, including OSHA/PSM safety incidents and incident investigations, California/EPA air and water environmental permit modifications, and permit reporting data quality issues.
  4. Specify engineering software requirements, evaluate market available options, and engage with IT through implementation to assure it meets biorefinery’s long-term technical needs.
  5. Identify and drive to completion internal work processes, procedures and software systems that staff need to be trained and using for the commissioning and startup of the biorefinery to meet regulatory, environmental, commercial, and contractual requirements.
  6. Direct a team of diverse engineering and technical managers, engineers, and subject matter experts to support both daily G&P operations and project development execution.
  7. Partner with Operations, Project Management Teams, and other support organizations to deliver safe, compliant, reliable, and efficient operations and project development/execution.
  8. Develop a collaborative teamwork approach with business partners.
  9. Shape and implement the development of fit-for-purpose engineering standards and specifications, including its project management process, balancing risk management with cost and organizational efficiency.
  10. Accountable for the annual development and execution of centrally managed operating expense programs, which improve risk-related aspects of integrity, design, and personal and process safety.
  11. Strategically distribute workloads; ensure that projects and support activities are completed within the intended timeframe and budget. Maintain assigned workloads in a flexible environment to meet the changing needs of Operations Projects.
  12. Mentor managers and individual contributors in the areas of customer support, project development, engineering design, and operational safety to deliver G&P’s strategies and goals.
  13. Clearly communicate expectations to managers; monitor and evaluate individual and team performance compared to expectations; determine the areas of strength and weakness of personnel and guide career development; appraise personnel of their performance status in a timely manner.
  14. Establish and evaluate group goals in alignment with departmental goals and clearly communicate expectations; evaluate organizational performance versus expectations to determine the areas of strength and weakness.

  4. Handle discipline and termination of employees in accordance with company policy

Education And Experience
  1. Bachelors degree in engineering (mechanical, civil, chemical, petroleum, control systems)
  2. 10-15 years of experience in engineering roles, with 5 years in leadership roles

Physical Requirements:
  1. Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  2. Prolonged periods of standing and walking
  3. Must be able to pass a physical test of pushing, pulling, and lifting a minimum of 50 lbs
  4. Ability to perform repetitive movements over long periods of time
  5. Requires frequent reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, and crouching
  6. Requires lifting, positioning, pushing, and/or transferring equipment and materials
