Chief Engineer
Salary: $97,900-142,000
Location: Reston, VA
Schedule: M-F 6:30-3:30 + weekends and holidays as needed
This role is the Chief Engineer supporting all facilities for the client located in Virginia, responsible for the operational management and effective daily leadership of the engineering team. The objective is to safely and efficiently operate machinery and systems in a cost-effective manner, protecting and improving the value of the client’s assets and ensuring that building engineering systems perform their intended function. The Chief Engineer will implement and manage the reliability-based maintenance function, execute equipment inspection and monitoring programs, define maintenance best practices, and continuously evaluate current methods to enhance performance.
WHAT YOU'LL DO:
- Oversee the maintenance and continuous operation of all building systems within the portfolio located in Virginia.
- Provide support to the FM team related to FLS/MPE for all facilities within the portfolio.
- Supervise and manage engineers and maintenance staff, including hiring, training, coaching, and personal development.
- Perform various PMs and provide hands-on support as needed.
- Participate in client-facing and property team communications.
- Assist in the development of a capital and expense improvement plan.
- Schedule, supervise, and direct contractors; monitor and document performance.
- Respond effectively to emergencies and service calls.
- Lead technical, safety, and operational process training programs.
- Conduct weekly tours of the buildings and document findings.
- Manage CMMS and BAS.
- Emulate a safety-first culture.
- Conduct risk assessments and mitigation.
- Perform ongoing preventive and repair work orders on facility systems and equipment.
- Utilize CMMS work order system for timely completion of maintenance tasks.
- Support Operations and Engineering leadership to ensure compliance with SLAs and KPIs.
- Share knowledge of HVAC, electric, plumbing, and other skills with team members.
- Analyze the operation of various systems and take corrective action as required.
- Monitor BAS systems, respond to alarms, and diagnose issues.
- Inspect, repair, and maintain HVAC equipment, plumbing components, and electrical components.
- Inspect damaged surfaces for repairs.
- Complete special tasks such as painting and general maintenance.
- Perform facility rounds and report on conditions impacting client occupancy.
- Identify cost-saving measures to reduce operating costs without reducing service quality.
- Provide best-in-class customer service to all tenants and agencies.
- Recognize safety hazards and propose elimination methods.
- Comply with JLL policy for procurement of facilities services.
- Participate in the JLL JCAP program.
- Participate in all team meetings and trainings.
- Keep records of building rounds, refrigerant logs, and engineering data sheets.
- Perform other duties as requested by engineering leadership and property management.
WHAT YOU BRING TO THE TABLE:
- 7+ years of related experience, especially as a Chief Engineer or similar.
- People management experience.
- Trade school education, union training, military service, or college is desirable.
- Universal CFC EPA certification.
- Experience using Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel, Teams).
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Comfort using ladders.
- Ability to frequently climb, bend, kneel, lift, and/or drive.
- Strong customer service and communication skills.
- Ability to maintain professionalism under stress.
- Ability to solve complex problems using rational judgment.
- Participation in an On-Call rotation, including holidays and weekends.
- Experience with secure facilities and ability to maintain a secret clearance as required.
- Valid Virginia Driver’s License.
