Amazon Robotics is seeking a talented, enthusiastic, and motivated Hardware Functional Safety Engineer to design safety-relevant controls for robotics systems and industrial equipment. This candidate should be motivated to adapt well-tried design and safety principles and industrial safety standards into a new and emerging industry. The preferred candidate would have demonstrated experience developing embedded control systems, experience with machine safety and/or functional safety standards, and possess excellent communication skills. This position reports directly to the Sr Manager of Functional Safety.


Key job responsibilities

The Hardware Functional Safety Engineer will be responsible for:

  1. Guiding the design controls for robotics and industrial automation equipment for use in a functionally safe product.
  2. Performing hazard and risk assessments, and safety analyses of robotics and industrial automation equipment.
  3. Writing or reviewing safety requirement specifications, safety management plans, safety concepts, and verification and validation plans.
  4. Applying IEC industrial standards for the development lifecycle of a robotic control system, and coaching developers on processes to apply during this phase.
  5. Collaboratively participating in interdisciplinary teams to execute product designs from concept to production including design, prototype, test, validation, and certification.
  6. Writing or reviewing functional specifications, design verification plans and test procedures.
  7. Analyzing failure modes of control circuits, the effect of the failure, and identifying mitigations and diagnostics.
  8. Driving projects to closure; ensuring that systems can be manufactured, deployed, maintained, and meet regulatory requirements for certification.
  9. Ensuring control systems comply to machinery safety standards (ISO 13849, IEC 62061, IEC 61508, IEC 61496).

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

- BS degree in electrical engineering or equivalent
- 4+ years of experience with complex electromechanical systems
- Experience with safety programs from concept through certification/regulatory process
- Demonstrated strong ability to move seamlessly between levels of abstraction – from system to the “nuts and bolts” implementation.
- Demonstrated experience working in a regulated industry (Functional Safety, Military, Medical, Automotive) applying standards to design and work products.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

- Experience with electronics systems including PLCs, microcontrollers, FPGAs, and/or mixed-signal designs.
- Commitment to rigorous testing practices and design process flows.

- Desire to develop deep understanding of the business and end user needs.
- Desire to commit and follow through on complex, multi-year programs.
- Ability to resolve complex issues in creative, efficient, and effective ways.
