The Hussman Institute has an exciting opportunity for a full-time Senior Network Engineer position. The incumbent evaluates system networking needs and recommends improvements and modifications to existing infrastructure. The incumbent also maintains the design and integrity of the University’s internal network, including customer-facing hosted and cloud environments. Moreover, an employee in this position provides expert technical assistance to team members with high-level system and networking requests.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS

  1. Supervises and assists the installation, upgrade, and support of assigned network hardware, operating systems, and software.
  2. Provides subject matter expertise to maintain the appropriate lifecycle for the technologies within scope.
  3. Provides quality assurance for engineering designs of junior team members.
  4. Analyses system performance, modifies parameters to improve output, and effectively utilizes system resources.
  5. Installs and manages network communication equipment according to written and graphic specifications.
  6. Performs moderately complex configuration and maintenance of multi-protocols enterprise network equipment supporting University data and optical network.
  7. Coordinates implementation and testing of changes to the network hardware, circuits, and software.
  8. Designs, implements, and maintains voice over IP solutions.
  9. Configures and troubleshoots data network routers and switches.
  10. Utilizes test equipment and network management components in the analysis and correction of technical problems.
  11. Performs first line problem resolution for network hardware and services.
  12. Assists in maintaining documentation of hardware and software.
  13. Monitors network performance levels and ensures network availability is maintained.
  14. Provides primary support for hardware used on the local area network, metropolitan area network (TLS), and wide area network.
  15. Responds to questions regarding problems related to network services.
  16. Provides guidance and direction to customers.
  17. Identifies and diagnoses moderately complex problems and factors affecting network performance.
  18. Alerts supervisor or experienced technicians of network failures or degradation and performs corrective action.
  19. Monitors network performance using available software tools and monitoring hardware.
  20. Submits documentation on the diagnosis and correction of troubles.
  21. Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Bachelor’s Degree in relevant field.
  2. CompTIA Network + Training, Cisco Networking Foundations Training.
  3. Minimum 5 years of relevant experience.

DEPARTMENT ADDENDUM

Department Specific Functions

Provide network as well as tier II and III level support for our department. Identified network performance issues through regular monitoring and implemented proactive measures to optimize performance and prevent downtime. Configured dedicated network connections for specialized lab equipment to ensure seamless communication and functionality within the lab environment. Collaborated with stateside and international staff and collaborators to establish VPN connections for remote sessions and for secure data transfers. Implemented troubleshooting protocols to address network issues promptly, resulting in minimal downtime for our staff and collaborators. Use extensive experience with TCP, IP, DHCP, SMTP, and FTP protocol to assist with configuration and troubleshooting our department network connections. Maintain detailed technical records of resolutions for later reference.

Education: Certificate in Computer/Network.

  1. CompTIA A+ Certified.
  2. CompTIA Network + Training.
  3. Cisco Networking Foundations Training.
  4. IT Cybersecurity Risk Management Essentials Training.

Experience: Experience with UM IT technical services.
