As a part of our continuous focus on offering high performance and cutting-edge products and solutions to our markets, the field of advanced power conversion, power management and controls and embedded systems is of strategic and critical importance. In this context, the Chief Engineer is a highly talented, motivated, creative, and experienced engineering leader in the field of Power Electronics, Power Management and Digital Controls technologies and applications, to include development, modelling, testing and validation.

The Chief Engineer advances the power electronics technology roadmap from a system viewpoint that supports both the existing company product line and enables expansion for the next generation products. The Chief Engineer is also expected to lead project execution and delivery in a role of Project Leader as well as in a role of Subject Matter Expert (SME) depending on the specifics of each assignment. She/He must be able to work independently on new product architecting, product conceptualization, product design (Advanced Development) which can be demonstrated to be mass producible, while also supporting ongoing customer product development activities as needed.

She/He must have expertise in power electronics design (thermo-electro-mechanical), simulation and modeling, and the inner workings of the various physics and functional aspects of the technology and products. Professional experience in high voltage power supply design environment for highly regulated markets and applications is also critical and necessary.

The Chief Engineer must be deadline driven, a self-starter and able to deliver completed assignments with minimum supervision while being a resource to support younger teammates and the wider engineering community in consulting and coaching capacities. Further, in this role, people management / soft skills, coaching and mentoring, are all key requirements to be successful.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Technical

  • Work closely with Sales and Business Development teams to address new customer requests and concerns as the “first line of defense”.
  • Collaborate closely with all key stakeholders at the onset of all customer project development planning activities and provide critical input for all Spellman products and platforms road maps: Technical direction definition, technical objectives and deliverables, risk identification and assessment, technologies and components, control schemes and strategies.
  • Provide day-to-day technical expertise to teammates across all Spellman business sites.
  • Interface with peers in the Engineering team to support the definition and the hands-on implementation of new features desired as described in product and application requirements per customer expectations.
  • Directly and actively support the review and interpretation of internal/external customer requirements.

Leadership and Managerial

  • Must be self-motivated, show initiative and have a strong desire to succeed with a “can do” approach to all challenges.
  • Responsibilities range from designing, developing power conversion and control circuits, component selection, bread-boarding, testing, troubleshooting, problem solving, system integration and reporting results.
  • Background in Power Electronics topologies and applications that implement Silicon Carbide, Gallium Nitride, or Silicon Devices for a systems viewpoint (one or more of the applicable engineering disciplines: Electrical, Controls, Mechanical and thermal).
  • Understanding of semiconductor non-idealities, losses, thermo-dielectric stress and preferably modelling and analysis.
  • High level circuit analysis, testing and debugging.
  • Demonstrated ability to investigate, design and develop power electronics hardware in one or more of the related engineering aspects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must be able to multitask while delivering results in a multi-priority environment.
  • Strong command of one or multiple relevant fundamental concepts such as thermal dynamics, controls, power conversion topologies, noise immunity and EMC, mechanical design and packaging.
  • Provide detailed written design theory and design documentation.
  • Verbal and technical language proficiency in English.
  • Support detailed cost analysis versus performance gains.
  • Support the generation of detailed design verification reports.
  • Hands-on knowledge in the use of laboratory test & measurement equipment.
  • Strong knowledge in one or more power electronics simulations tools (PSIM, PSPICE, Matlab / Simulink, Simplorer, etc.), as well as tools to model thermos-mechanical behaviors (Ansys, SolidWorks, Inventor, etc.).
  • General knowledge in all core fields (power conversion, electronics, electromagnetics, controls hardware, firmware and software, thermal, mechanical, packaging optimization for high voltage applications, insulation systems and materials).
  • Excellent problem definition and solving techniques as well as good organization and documentation abilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and with others.

Desired Characteristics

  • Plan and formulate engineering programs and organize project teams according to project requirements and priorities.
  • Participate in and contribute to strategic discussions regarding products, markets, and technology/product road-mapping.
  • Review product design for compliance with engineering principles, company standards, customer contract requirements and applicable specifications (industry standards and homologation requirements).
  • Lead and oversee product design reviews and provide applicable approval for design changes, specifications.
  • Ensure compliance with all Spellman and other governing security regulations.

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS

  • Master’s degree or equivalent (Ph.D. preferred) in Electrical Engineering and 15+ years demonstrated experience in hands-on product and technology development in the power conversion and management (power electronics field). High voltage X-ray power conversion technology experience is very highly desired.
  • Extensive knowledge of power electronics, power conversion, analog circuit design and functional knowledge of magnetic design principles, both low and high voltage is preferred, and/or relevant thermo-electro-mechanical engineering fields.
  • 7+ years leading an engineering team in a global company with a preference for direct exposure to a manufacturing environment.
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities with a focus on tactical as well as strategic business aspects.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify and enhance the strengths of team members, coaching, motivating, and directing as needed.
  • Commitment to fostering high performance, and an environment of open collaboration and teamwork.
  • Flexible, customer-focused orientation with an eye on successful and seamless project execution as well as on the strategic needs of the company.
  • Passionate about collaborating with other company teams in a multidisciplinary and multi-functional environment (sales and marketing, operations, quality, supply chain), customers, etc. to drive a continuous and strong focus on value creation.
  • Excellent project management skills and knowledge of other engineering design and analysis tools in the field of power conversion, power management, digital and analog control.
  • Willingness to travel both domestically and internationally (approximately 10%).

Our good faith estimate of the salary range for this role is $175,000 - $217,000. Exact compensation may vary based on skills, experience, and other factors. In addition to base pay, we offer a full benefits package.
