DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW (UCE)

The Utilities & Central Energy (UCE) group specializes in large central plant work, particularly for district energy serving cities, universities, hospitals, and manufacturing campuses. Our expertise covers both energy production and distribution.

POSITION OVERVIEW & RESPONSIBILITIES

This position is for entry-level Electrical Engineers interested in a career in electrical power systems. The Electrical Engineer I plays a key role in the successful execution of projects. This individual will provide technical and engineering excellence, as well as successful delivery of work to our customers. The Electrical Engineer I is responsible for a high level of customer satisfaction by ensuring expectations are clearly communicated and managed.

Specific responsibilities will include, but not be limited to, the following:

  • Working with the Senior Electrical Engineers to learn and develop design skills.
  • Design for medium voltage and 480-volt power systems, including generation and distribution.
  • Design of special systems including ground fault, lightning protection, engine-generator, UPS, DC, motor control centers, and power factor correction.
  • Prepares engineering documents and equipment specifications to meet codes, standards, and contracted scope of work.
  • Preparation of three lines and schematic drawings.
  • Performs power system studies, including arc fault hazard analysis, short circuit, load flow, protective device coordination, and harmonics studies.
  • Reviews and approves contractor submittals, conducts construction observation, and provides field support during startup and commissioning of electrical systems and equipment.
  • Develops labor/cost estimates for assigned scope of work.
  • Creates project plans and schedules for the execution of work.
  • Supports the business development process through input to proposals and meetings with prospective customers.
  • Provides technical and engineering support to other departments/disciplines.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Strong electrical fundamentals knowledge or experience.
  • Project experience and/or working knowledge of Process, Instrumentation & Controls through co-ops or internships.
  • Willingness to develop in-depth knowledge of industry codes and standards (NEC, NFPA, NESC, ANSI/IEEE, etc.).
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Ability to assimilate a range of ideas, programs, or alternatives into a set of recommendations.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate with others.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to establish rapport and credibility with customers and other stakeholders.
  • Attention to detail and ability to manage multiple tasks.
  • Knowledge of computer technology and specific areas of application.
  • Proficient in use of MS Office (Word, Outlook, Excel).
  • Travel: May include up to 25% domestic travel.

Preferred

  • Willingness to pursue Professional Engineering (PE) certification.

  • Some work locations will feature the tough terrain typical of construction sites.
