Division Summary:

The Emerging Technologies Innovation Center seeks a Senior Principal Chief Engineer for Emerging Energy and Environmental Innovations. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing Division and Corporate strategies in emerging energy and environmental technologies. In particular, technologies related to the energy/water interface and systems dealing with maritime issues will be of special interest. The CE will be expected to work across MITRE Labs to develop joint efforts with the other Innovation Centers to identify and win competitive R&D grants and opportunities and help mentor and develop technical staff and capabilities. This role requires a high level of expertise, leadership, and strategic thinking. The successful candidate will have a proven track record of driving innovation and economic growth. Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Develop and lead execution of scientific and technical initiatives to address national and global problems and accelerate the development and deployment of advanced technologies. This includes the execution of internal R&D funding, direct work programs with our FFRDCs, and whole-of-nation engagements across industry, academia, and government.
  • Serve as a resource, subject matter expert, and advisor to MITRE’s mission critical programs (MCPs), MITRE’s National Security (MNS) program, and MITRE’s Public Sector (MPS) program. Pursue risk mitigation strategies, as well as technology development, deployment, verification, and validation that drive work-product quality and impact.
  • Represent MITRE and their area of expertise externally through professional engagement in advisory boards, study commissions, professional societies, academic publications, and other external venues.
  • Develop more junior staff and identify opportunities for them to engage externally.
  • Strengthen national competitiveness and security through innovative strategies.
  • Establish and manage domestic and international science and technology partnerships.
  • Monitor and analyze the latest trends in emerging technologies to identify new opportunities.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to ensure alignment of innovation strategies.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Typically requires a minimum of 12 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 10 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 7 years’ experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.
  • Master's degree in Engineering, Technology, Business, or related field.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in a senior leadership role in engineering or innovation.
  • Proven track record of driving place-based innovation and economic growth.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to manage and inspire a diverse team in a collaborative environment.
  • Excellent strategic planning and execution skills.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills.
  • This position requires a minimum of 4 days a week on-site.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD degree in Engineering, Technology, Business, or related field.
  • Demonstrated expertise in applying emerging technologies to solve complex problems.
  • Proven experience in establishing and managing domestic and international partnerships.
