CHIEF ENGINEER

Overview

The Chief Engineer is responsible for planning, organizing, and directing the activities of the Engineering Department associates to provide effective upkeep of equipment and facilities in accordance with policies, procedures, standards, and practices set by Seton Medical Center, the State Department of Public Health, and other local community governmental agencies.

Responsibilities

1. Performs the necessary preventive maintenance and operations work orders. Ensures all regulatory requirements are met on EOC and Life and Safety.
2. Provide stock levels on all medical gases.
3. Schedule all activities of the Stationary Engineers and inspect work performed and materials used. Evaluate daily all work orders and assess priorities and distribute them to responsible staff for action, monitor progress, and adjust resources to accommodate emergency maintenance requests.
4. Reviews incomplete work orders and informs requestor of schedule changes. Provides weekly reports to the Director of Engineering regarding any scheduled work delayed for parts, emergencies, or other reasons.
5. Schedule Engineers for regular workdays, holidays, and vacation relief.
6. Prepares labor and material purchase requisitions and distributes for approval.
7. Schedules and assigns personnel for all preventive maintenance and repair operations.
8. Represents the department on committees related to safety as directed by the Director of Engineering.
9. Maintain self-improvement program and keep abreast of new equipment, standards, codes, maintenance procedures, and emergency response regarding hazardous materials.
10. Perform on-the-job training of Stationary Engineers.
11. Consistently maintain appearance that is appropriate, safe, and in accordance with department of Medical Center standards. Always display clean and visible identification.
12. Demonstrates commitment to quality of service.
13. Complies with departmental medical center and regional policies and procedures.
14. Functions as a team member.
15. Maintains regular attendance in the workplace.
16. Obtain quotes from vendors on work that needs to be completed. Submits quotes to the Director of Engineering.
17. Ensures all PM and regulatory checks are completed in a timely manner.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS/JOB REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION: AA or AS Degree in Biomedical Equipment Technology/Electronic Technology or equivalent.

EXPERIENCE: A minimum of 2 years experience as a manager or supervisor of Plant Services or Engineering, or 5 years of experience as an Assistant Chief Engineer in an acute hospital environment or similar businesses such as major hotels and/or high-rise business complexes.

CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURE: Valid California Driver's License.

OTHER SKILLS, ABILITIES & KNOWLEDGE: Good verbal and writing communication skills. Background in medical or hospital setting. Ability to effectively communicate with medical, nursing, and technical staffs. Senior Journeyman Trade Craft ability in the skill areas supervised. Knowledge of Title 22, JCAHO, and Life Safety Codes. Computer literate.
