Pay Range
$106,440 - $136,680 Annually for the SES.1 level
$127,680 - $163,968 Annually for the SES.2 level
Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.

Job Description

We have multiple openings for Materials Scientists, Materials Engineers, and/or Metallurgists. You will work in a team environment and under the guidance of staff members to execute on experiments to investigate the process, structure, properties, performance relationship of a variety of materials with emphasis on metal alloys. You will support a range of activities in the areas of physical metallurgy, materials processing, materials characterization, mechanical testing, fracture mechanics, welding engineering, and materials process development for projects that support national security programs. These positions are in the Materials Engineering Division (MED) within the Engineering Directorate.

These positions will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

You will

  1. Work under general guidance of staff metallurgists, in areas such as materials development, materials processing, welding engineering, fracture toughness testing, mechanical testing, and materials characterization, to resolve process problems and utilization of metals and alloys.
  2. Conduct, analyze, and present data from experiments to develop and improve the understanding of materials.
  3. Determine creative solutions to technical problems involving the processing and utilization of alloys by reviewing scientific and technical literature and experimental techniques.
  4. Disseminate results, including methods developed, and keep current on materials development/characterization methods.
  5. Collaborate with scientists, engineers, and technologists to accomplish research goals.
  6. Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities, at the SES.2 level

  1. Work under minimal guidance, in areas such as materials development, materials processing, welding engineering, fracture toughness testing, mechanical testing, and materials characterization, to resolve process problems and utilization of metals and alloys.
  2. Contributes to the fulfillment of project and organizational goals.
  3. May provide guidance to and/or informal mentoring to less-experienced personnel.

Qualifications

  1. Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. Citizenship.
  2. Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science and Engineering or related field or the equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  3. Experience conducting directed experiments related to the processing and characterization of materials and mechanical testing.
  4. Experience with material characterization, such as x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, resonance ultrasound, and Electron Backscatter Diffraction.
  5. Sufficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment, document analyses and prepare, present and explain technical information and publications.
  6. Ability to anticipate and accommodate evolving programmatic direction and priorities.

Additional qualifications at the SES.2 level

  1. Comprehensive knowledge of advanced mechanical test methods, such as fracture and fatigue testing.
  2. Comprehensive knowledge of metallurgy and welding issues related to pressure vessel qualification and fitness for service evaluations.
  3. Broad application of laser, electron beam, or similar plasma-based welding technologies.

Qualifications We Desire

  1. Master’s degree in Materials Science and Engineering, Metallurgy, or Welding Engineering.
  2. Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team with effective creativity, organizational and interpersonal skills.

Security Clearance

This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.
