Mechanical Design Engineer with Project Management skill set – Startup Opportunity

READ CAREFULLY: THIS IS A PART-TIME, ENTREPRENEURIAL, EQUITY-ONLY STARTUP OPPORTUNITY.

COMPANY OVERVIEW:

Our group is a high energy, early stage startup focusing on developing and then bringing to market a revolutionary mid to high level quality BICYCLE COMPONENT. We are in the pre-funding phase and currently have 3 principal partners (one of whom is a mechanical engineer). The fourth member is a Co-Engineer. If chosen, you would become the other Co-Engineer with project management responsibilities.

This mechanical design engineer/project manager would report directly to the CEO. You would get overall directives from the CEO, but would work collaboratively with the two existing engineers on the project. You would be the direct conduit responsible for conveying information from the other two engineers and ensuring all engineer created deliverables are completed on time and to a quality standard.

We are looking for a unique skill set that we feel can be fulfilled by one of two groups of people. CRITERIA: Those who are no more than five years out from completing their undergraduate degree or those who have just retired. We need someone who has the time to devote to our project and make it their own. We cannot emphasize this TIME AVAILABILITY point enough. If you are a mid career engineer or fall outside the above criteria, we may be seeking you relatively soon, but for now, please only applicants who meet the above CRITERIA reply.

Being a team player and collaborating with our existing engineers will be critical to the success of the venture.

Compensation would be in the form of an equity percentage (realized through actual sales of the product when it gets sold in the marketplace). Someone who is motivated by the prospect of future rewards (both monetary and intrinsic) will be the best candidate. We will sell directly to the OEM bicycle manufacturers (of which worldwide there are over 400 brands). The bike market has been solid over the past few years and this product will help those companies with a hunger to differentiate themselves in the marketplace to attract new customers and up sell existing ones.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

We are looking for an experienced mechanical engineer who has solid CAD skills (preferably with SolidWorks since that is what our engineering team uses. 3D modeling know-how and proficiency is required. If you have a grasp of FEA that would be extremely helpful. Previous hands- on mechanical prototype making is a requirement as well. Lathe and CNC experience is desired.

In exchange for an equity percentage (which will be discussed if interviewed), we ask for a high level of commitment which we estimate to be 7 to 10 hours per week. We want to get this done ASAP so the sooner it’s completed, the sooner we all will be sharing in the financial rewards. We anticipate this design/engineering work to be very fun and rewarding for you as it is for the rest of us already on the team. If your initial gut feeling is that this venture would be a strain and burden in your life balance, then this position is not for you. The motivation has to come from within. Once you learn of the benefits of this product, our hope is that you’ve experienced pain and problems with the thing our product will replace. The impact this product will have on bicycle riders and the world economy is huge.

All or part of the team generally meets in-person once every two weeks and has regular communication via email/phone each week to share progress of their assigned responsibility. This also helps cement the interdependent commitment we each have with our respective deliverables. It is preferred that the candidate live within 50 miles of Boston just to make physical meetings easier.

To be most properly motivated and dedicated to reach the product’s completion, the candidate should have a love for mountain biking and be a semi-regular rider. Even though “road” oriented riders will benefit from our product, they might not be able to identify as strongly with the need for our product (from lack of previous “pain experienced” that most off road mountain bikers have experienced or intermittently experience). Any mechanical engineering cyclist is encouraged to apply, but those who are mountain bikers will be better suited to tackle this project. If you don’t ride bikes at all, not a problem. You will have to adopt the vision of why our product is needed for its intended audience.

QUALIFICATIONS

– Excellent work ethic and attitude in meeting and exceeding expectations set forth.

– Strong technical ability with CAD software and mechanical devices.

– Demonstrated team player with ability to learn complex technical material.

– Automotive engineering background a plus

– Own your own CAD software license (it will not be provided)

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

– Create engineering drawings for the bicycle product

– Conduct product testing

– Assist in product specification selection and manufacturing coordination with off-the-shelf suppliers and custom contract manufacturers.

– Work to resolve testing phase glitches that may arise

– Prepare product for mass manufacturability

If you are interested in the above opportunity, please respond with your resume (text, HTML, PDF, or Word acceptable) descriptive cover letter highlighting reasons you would be the right fit, and answers to the following questions:

– What experience do you have that prepares you for this position?

– Do you have U.S. citizenship?

– If no U.S. citizenship, do you have a green card? Work Visa?

– Do you have previous start up company experience?

– Have you previously owned your own company?

– Do you currently own your own company?

We look forward to hearing from you and hopefully choosing you to make your mark on the bicycle market with our monumental innovation.
