The Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner is a licensed professional provider who functions in collaboration with an attending physician in a variety of practice settings at YNHHS. Provides exceptional direct diagnostic and therapeutic patient care to the highest standards of the organization as part of a multidisciplinary team. Cultivates a patient-centric environment which focuses on the whole individual inclusive of physical, psychosocial, spiritual and functional needs of the patient, family, and significant others. Serves as the focal professional for the continuity of care in patient care within scope of practice standards, as well as specialty specific standards to address and resolve problems that may arise.

Responsibilities

  1. Clinical Care: The Physician Assistant (PA) or the Nurse Practitioner (NP) provides assessment, triage, and therapeutic management of patient/family needs throughout the disease process as an integral part of an interdisciplinary team. The NP/PA provides optimal patient care, from diagnostic to prognostic matters, in collaboration with the attending supervising/collaborating physician(s) in accordance with state law and hospital regulations. This individual may perform assessments, obtain medical histories, perform physical examinations, review/order diagnostic tests, formulate and manage treatment plans, and may have autonomous practice managing certain patient populations.
  2. Patient Education & Psychosocial Support: The NP/PA will educate patients/families on care and recommended resources. In collaboration with the supervising MD, this may include admitting instructions, treatment plans, side effects of treatments/medications, and discharge plans.
  3. Information Management: The NP/PA ensures appropriate documentation in accordance with hospital and regulatory requirements and protects information from unauthorized access.
  4. Quality Management: The NP/PA is expected to demonstrate high standards of moral and ethical behavior, professionalism, and commitment to patient care, ensuring compliance with healthcare regulatory requirements.
  5. Professional Development: The NP/PA continuously engages in projects that maintain and advance professional competency, serves as a clinical resource for new house staff, and may collaborate on research and quality improvement projects.

Qualifications

EDUCATION: Graduate from an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant Program.

EXPERIENCE: Prefer clinical working experience as a NP/PA within the given specialty/service line, but none required. Evidence of current competence to practice must be obtained during the Medical Staff appointment process.

LICENSURE: Active PA Certification by the NCCPA, Connecticut State Physician Assistant License, ACLS/BLS Certified, and additional certifications as required.

Additional Information:
Surgical oncology inpatient coverage needed at York Street Campus (New Haven) and Bridgeport Hospital inpatient and OR.
