A successful candidate should have a strong technical background in science, engineering, or mathematics, a passion and desire to learn, and is expected to be a highly motivated, detail-oriented, well-organized, self-directed, and excellent team player.

About the Day-to-Day Responsibilities of the Role

  • Analyze wildfire data to build the basis for wildfire damage and loss estimation.
  • Build vulnerability models to assess damage to buildings, infrastructures, and industrial facilities subjected to wildfires as well as wildfire smoke.
  • Process simulation outputs and large experimental datasets, performing statistical analysis to validate model components and overall performance.
  • Run large-scale simulations on AWS and manage cloud-based computational resources efficiently.
  • Present findings and models to technical and non-technical audiences, and provide support to clients and staff as needed.
  • Contribute to technical writing for internal and external publications.

Qualifications

  • Master's with 2+ years of related experience or PhD degree in Civil, Fire Protection, Mechanical, or other relevant engineering disciplines.
  • Knowledge of wildfire risk mitigation, wildfire-related insurance regulations, and state legislation.
  • Hands-on experience in fire risk assessment or post-fire damage assessment.
  • Familiarity with C++ programming and experience with data analysis tools such as Python, R, Matlab, or others.
  • Experience in large-scale computational simulations, preferably with knowledge of AWS or other cloud computing platforms.
  • Demonstrated experience in statistical and probabilistic modeling.
  • Familiarity with GIS data processing, analysis, and visualization.
  • Ability to communicate effectively through verbal and written mediums with technical and non-technical audiences.
