Job Requirements / Description
We Are:
Fermilab is America's premier laboratory for particle physics and accelerator research, funded by the U.S. Department of Energy. We support discovery science experiments in Illinois and at locations around the world, including deep underground mines in South Dakota and Canada, mountaintops in Arizona and Chile, CERN in Europe and the South Pole.
We are strategic risk takers, innovators, and collaborators. We are engineers, scientists, technicians, administrative professionals. We are over 2,000 employees advancing knowledge for the benefit of humankind. Fermilab has been at the forefront of particle physics for more than 40 years. We build world-leading accelerators and detectors to conduct some of the most advanced particle physics experiments possible. We collect and analyze the data from those experiments with some of the most powerful computers in the world. We conduct this research on a 6,800-acre prairie, 35 miles outside Chicago, a treasure that has been designated a National Environmental Research Park.
Join the Fermilab team at the Accelerator Directorate (AD) as a Power Distribution and Cable System Engineer! In this role, you'll be part of AD's Power Electronic Systems Department (PESD), where you'll be responsible for designing, installing, operating, maintaining, and repairing distribution for DC and pulsed power systems. AD has over 150 MVA of thyristor controlled pulsed power on a medium voltage distribution system and 75 MVA of thyristor controlled pulsed power on a low voltage distribution systems. These systems are crucial for powering particle accelerator and beam-line magnets and loads.
We work on cutting-edge projects with multidisciplinary teams to meet the challenging requirements of future experiments. You'll need to expand your knowledge and be able to contribute to major projects like ACORN, LBNF/DUNE, Mu2e, PIP II, as well as smaller accelerator improvement projects.
If you're an experienced engineer, who is self-driving, self-learning, and looking to work with high-powered systems and make a significant impact in the field of particle physics, this role is for you!
Working under the general guidance of experienced engineers, you'll be involved in constructing, modifying, and commissioning low voltage electrical power distribution systems and medium voltage switchgear. Additionally, you'll assist in designing and supervising the installation of control signal wiring, along with other general electrical engineering tasks.
This role is not eligible for sponsorship assistance.
